I know there was some push back to my initial comment in this thread, and rightfully so. I don’t blame anyone for taking these allegations seriously. However, In the last day as the media has gotten a clearer picture from the students, police, and BYU Athletic Department, the story seems to come down to the Duke player mishearing something in the crowd.

Our fans yell ‘Cougar’ as you can imagine, and also yell the names of the opposing players. Duke has a player named Nikki. There was likely some disconnect in one of those two things. The crowd of 5700 was also the biggest Duke has played against, the atmosphere likely had them on edge.

  2. I’m not here to defend racism, I’m abhorrently against it. And you guys are right, I may be reading too much into my brother’s experience in the student section from that game.

It’s an issue that I know the university is addressing in every conceivable way, and I am hopeful we can get it rooted out of our school and state.

Not saying I don't believe you, but how did they figure out who was saying it and ban them then?

The person banned wasn’t banned for a racist comment, they were banned for approaching the Duke team after a set. It was a handicapped kid who wasn’t even a BYU student, and the Duke girl said she thinks it was also him who said the slur.

  4. My brother was at the game in the student section and said he didn’t hear anything of that nature at the game. Within 5 seats of the alleged slur usage was A group of black BYU basketball players who undoubtedly would have reported or dealt with it.

The godmother who broke the story also has a long twitter history of anti-white messages. She’s in the middle of a campaign in Texas, and wasn’t even at the game. BYU’s AD has spoken to every student, player, staff member at the game and no one else heard it besides the 1 Duke player. Not even her teammates have come out saying they heard Any slur.

Im not saying it isn’t possible it happened. And if it did, it’s horrible and the person responsible deserves to be punished and any lack of response called out and fixed immediately. But the story just isn’t adding up.

  5. From what I’ve heard Gunner is doubtful, and Puka is likely to play. Our backups are good, there isn’t a big drop off from gunner to the next guy or two. Puka would be a major loss, though.

To the person who mentioned the under throws, yes it is by design. Our receivers are great at winning 1 on 1 deep reps, so our OC has Jaren throw it where they’ll have a chance to make a play every time.

Our defensive scheme is certainly a hot issue within our fanbase, specifically in the run game. We gave up over 5 yards per carry on first down last year. That makes it really easy for teams to move the chains and churn out long drives against us

So maybe the next thing to consider is does a wet track favor either team, to the best of our knowledge ....?

2 of BYU’s 3 losses last year were in rain games (Boise, UAB). Both times our offense wasn’t the same and in the Boise game we had 3 lost fumbles that effectively lost us the game.

I’d like to think that our coaches have our guys more prepared for a heavy rain fall, but you never know and probably cost us a NY6 game last year with the Boise loss.

Between the new class coming in and the transfer portal it's something like 40 new players on the team this year...that has to be a record

I can only imagine how our coordinators are trying to prepare for this one. New players, new coordinators, what film do you even watch? The first couple of quarters should be intriguing to see the chess match.
