Not gonna lie.  I was downright pissed yesterday.  But after reading about Deion's intro yesterday in Colorado and then seeing AG's intro today - I'm feeling a bit more optimistic.  This could still go horribly sideways, but nothing is every guaranteed.  Some people just inspire you to believe in them and he seems to be that type.  Not sure whether the current players will be on board, but I believe he will be able to recruit the right players for his system AND be able to coach them up.  At least we know he will work harder than anyone in the country...except for his staff...who will work harder than him.  LOL.

"USF" and "possible" don't go well together it seems...

Indeed.  Haven't been this consumed with USF football in years.  NGL kinda felt good.  That is, until the kick in the nuts reminded me what being a USF fan is all about.

I think he misunderstood.  USF conceded that we have now fallen below Liberty and FAU as desirable programs, and that Deion's only interest in us was using us as leverage with Colorado.

My guess is this is the last we hear from "deioniscoming."  Would be interesting to know what his angle was, though.  Was he a UCF troll or just some bored Tampa kid wanting to feel important for a few days?

Problem is that everyone in the world knew that Sanders was going to Colorado EXCEPT Kelly and the USF fanbase.  Now Kelly probably has to go back to the drawing board.  How many of those coaches who were wanting the job see how bad this was botched and now say "Nah, I'm good"?  Kelly is going to have to scramble to find someone willing to take this lousy program and be the whipping boy for a butthurt fanbase.  And when he does find that courageous soul, is going to have to iron out the contract details.  We probably won't hear anything until last minute.

After this fustercluck, Jim Leavitt is the ONLY option IMO.  And I was one of the ones saying he'd never coach at USF again.

Kelly has screwed this up from every single angle and left the program in shambles.  According to media accounts, Deion's camp hasn't been particularly good at hiding things from anyone except Kelly.  If he had read the tea leaves 4 days ago and turned the page, the narrative would have been quite different.  Our fanbase had already been whittled away to all but the most diehard - and the way this was played just took out a whole new swath of those.  We can sit here and talk about good Xs-and-Os coaches or good recruiters all we want, but what we need more than anything right now is a tourniquet to stop the bleeding with the goodwill of the fanbase - and the ONLY person who can do that is Leavitt.  Yes, the optics are bad.  It will be obvious to the whole world that Leavitt was not choice #1 (because why wait to hire him?).  Kelly just needs to be up front and admit that he was chasing a unicorn because that is what the fans wanted.  Acknowledge that Leavitt was not the first choice but frame it as if he were a close second and may actually be the better fit for the program in the long-run.  Imagine the legend of the Jim after he builds the program, gets fired, and then comes riding back in on his white horse to save us from certain death...

Point being that none of it matters without fan support.  And sure, fans will come with the wins...but can the wins come without fans?

It really depends on what it is that he wants.  I doubt he expects anything unreasonable...probably just doesn't want a half-@$$ed bounce house.  You can't let him completely dictate terms on the OCS but I don't think it would be a big deal for USF to say that they will certainly make every effort to accommodate his wishes.

My source in the graphics department as ESPN says that they are 90% sure they will be airing Deion's decision live at 8pm on Monday...

I really don't get all the love for Gruden.  He won a Super Bowl with Dungy's team.  Outside of that, he had far more losing seasons than winning seasons.  With all of the baggage that comes with him, I just don't get it.

Ed Orgeron won a National Championship and has had far more success on the college level and yet he isn't even a blip on most people's radar.

The very fact that you would call someone "gay" or "homo" as an insult is indicative of a negative attitude or disposition towards gay people.  That is the TEXTBOOK definition of homophobia.  One does not have to hate or mistreat people to be prejudiced against them.  If you think that all men walk around calling each other "gay" or "homo" then the issue is your limited social circle.  There are plenty of "dudes" out there who do not.

That's all fine and all, but perception matters more than reality when it comes to recruiting.  How many players will want to come play for him?  How many parents won't even take his phone calls?  He has made no attempt at a public apology or damage control - whether he was in the right or not - he simply has too much baggage.  The only way USF will ever be a relevant program again is with someone who can outrecruit our level.

I'm not saying that it wasn't a mistake.  I have mixed feelings on that.  I remember thinking Leavitt had plateaued at the time and that we needed to bring in someone to build on his foundation.  But hindsight is 20/20 and looking back on it, it would have been better to move forward with Leavitt than to turn it over to the golfer CSH.

What I AM saying is that it wasn't wrong...as in somehow ethically or morally questionable.  Leavitt caused the situation and they did what they felt they had to do.  OP was blasting the University like some sort of conspiracy theorist as if USF cooked it all up or something.  That's just silly.

Look, Leavitt is on my short list.  I'm alumni as well - and I attended during our golden years.  Hell, I was at the Auburn game and WV game (as well as all the other home games).  Even met CJL.  He was a god in my eyes.  But to blame the University for this and even claim that they "broke ethical norms" is utterly ridiculous.  Leavitt allegedly physically assaulted a player, which is at least a fireable offense, if not a crime.  Even if you don't believe those allegations, he lied and interfered with the investigation (which, why do you do that if you are innocent?).  If nothing else - interfering with the investigation is a MAJOR ethical violation and certainly a fireable offense.  I'm willing to forgive him for some very poor decisions and even hire him back - but to say that the University was somehow in the wrong is ludicrous.

Seems to me that the subject of ‘plateauing’ came up some years back…hmmm, trying to remember the context of that . I know, I know, some of you like to pine over romance of yesteryear, but I just don't think hitting the replay button is the way to go.  Find some guy who’s been a head coach at the sub-FBS division, a proven track record of winning and wants to coach here at USF (even though it's an audition for the bigs, we all know it). Apparently, there is a huge chasm between being assistant deputy vice undersecretary for football offensive operations (shortened to co-coordinator) and being a head coach in FBSland. Lesson learned, improve the next time around. 

When your significant other cheats on you and you split up...but then they realize they made a mistake and beg you to take them back.  Your broken heart causes you to try to forgive and forget in hopes of just picking up where you left off.  So you take them back.  But something has changed.  You've fallen out of love.  And try as you might, you can never rekindle that flame.  I'm afraid that's what would happen if we rehired CJL.  Sure, we'll always be his first love.  But that ship has sailed.

1. Ed Orgeron - The guy just loves football and wants to coach again.  He has already won a National Championship at LSU (nothing left to prove) and also won at other stops such as Southern Cal.  Has made plenty of money and seems like the type that would prefer to win on a smaller level without all of the pressure of P5 as long as he's coaching.

2. Jim Leavitt - It's possible now that we have a completely new admin, and it would excite the fanbase.  But something tells me that even though he would give his all, he would never be able to rekindle that flame and recapture what was lost.  Still, its worth a shot. 

3. Tom Herman, Bryan Harsin, Matt Rhule - All won on our level and found out that the grass isn't always greener when your competition is elite.  I would include Frost in this, but my gut tells me that his success had more to do with MM than with his coaching ability.  Rhule, IMO, is the least likely of this bunch to be interested.

Others:

Deion will NOT come to USF - and furthermore, I personally don't want him.  He may get good recruits, but its not sustainable.  I imagine the character/culture gains we did make under CJS (perhaps the only positive he did while he was here) would be a complete 180 under Prime Time.  Plus, I don't think he's a good coach - just a good recruiter.  At some point, his competition level will even the playing field.  It's not difficult to win at FCS with a few outstanding recruits - but when you are playing with other equally talented teams, then X's and O's are much more important.

Urban Meyer, Jon Gruden, Art Briles - No.  Just...no.

Kenny Dillingham, Alex Atkins, Alex Golesh, Todd Monken - There is a lot of potential here.  High risk/high reward.  But how much of their success as coordinators is them and how much is their HC or system?  And you know that USF would just be a quick stepping stone for these guys.

Manny Diaz, Dan Mullen - No feeling one way or another on these.  Not sure they'd be interested in the job anyway.

Tom Allen - Would love this hire (would love to see some FIRE on the sidelines again) but unless he's fired, I don't see him leaving his Alma Mater.

Justin Fuente - Never cared for him.  Thought he was overrated and lucky.

Robert Weiner, Shaun King - Always had a good feeling about them, but it's a big risk.  They do know Tampa though.

Larry Scott, Danny Verpaele, Auggie Sanchez, Marquel Blackwell - USF connections but I just don't think they'd succeed here.

Agree. Another thing to consider is the fact that several freshman have really outshined some of the upperclassmen. The freshmen were recruited by Taggart. I really think he is going to build something special, but there is only so much he can do with what he has right now. You can't polish a turd.

Pretty sure most of the freshman were recruited by Holtz and stuck around when CWT was hired.

 

I credit Taggart for closing the deal on LB Nigel Harris, DB Johnny Ward and DB Nate Godwin.  DB Torrel Saffod and QB Steven Bench are both transfers, but were recruited by Taggart.  Regardless, Holtz left the cupboard pretty bare.
