Their RPI is not too good. They'll need to win 3 more games to really have a decent chance of getting to the dance.

USF Women Plan To Improve NCAA Odds

By BRETT McMURPHY bmcmurphy@tampatrib.com

Published: Feb 26, 2005

TAMPA - As far as South Florida women's basketball coach Jose Fernandez is concerned, today's game against UAB is the Bulls' final one in the Sun Dome this season.

Although it's the Bulls' regular-season finale, USF has bid to host games in the Women's National Invitation Tournament.

However, the Bulls (18-9, 8-5) have their sights on bigger goals - the program's first NCAA Tournament berth.

``I'm hoping this is the last game in the Sun Dome, because that means we'll be in the NCAA Tournament,'' Fernandez said.

The Conference USA tournament champion receives an automatic NCAA bid. The Bulls, if they win today and Marquette loses to regular- season champion DePaul, would be seeded fifth in the C- USA tournament.

For the Bulls to receive an at-large NCAA bid, they likely would have to win today plus three C-USA tournament games (reaching the final) to improve their RPI. USF's RPI, as of Thursday, was No. 71, sixth-best in C-USA, according to CollegeRPI.com.

Today's final regular-season contest will be the final home game for seniors Anedra Gilmore and Alana Tanksley. They'll be joined in the starting lineup by juniors Sharon Cambridge and Ezria Parsons, and sophomore Jessica Dickson.

``This game is huge,'' Fernandez said. ``It puts us in position that if we win, our opening conference tournament game puts us at 20 wins.

``It's ridiculous how far we've come. It's come full circle [from the 2001 4-24 season]. Everything we had to go through - the racial discrimination allegations, no tradition, the type of facilities, the type of attendance we had.''

What I don't get is how the RPI has multiple Sun Belt teams ahead of us...since when did the Sun Belt get so good at WBB ???

But I agree....looking at everything, we need to get to the finals.  Might as well win the tourney if we can get that far!

GOOD LUCK LADIES!

Brad...Funny thing is I was just looking at last year's Baseball RPIs and the Big East ended up ahead of C-USA! Who would have figured that  ???

Official game story:

USF Women End Regular Season With 70-43 Rout Of UAB; Jessica Dickson Nets 34

Tampa, FL (Feb. 26, 2004) – The USF women’s basketball team got a game and season high 34 points from Jessica Dickson (Ocala, FL), including 26 in the first half, as the it turned in a 70-43 rout of UAB Saturday in both teams season finale.

The win gives the Bulls their best regular season record in school history (19-9) and sets a new school mark for conference wins in a season (9-5 Conference USA). USF also set a new school record for wins at home with 13 (13-2).

Dickson became the 14th player in school history to score 1,000 career points when she drained her sixth field goal of the first half with 9:28 left to make the score 21-5 Bulls. Her accomplishment makes her the first woman in school history to reach the illusive mark prior to the end of her sophomore year, while she joins former men’s player Charlie Bradley (1982-85) as just the second player ever to play basketball at USF to accomplish the feat.

The Bulls jumped out to fast 8-0 lead and never looked back en route to a 37-19 halftime edge.

USF came out in the second half and shot 46.2 percent (12-26) from the field in the second stanza while stretching the lead to a game-high 27 points three times in the last two minutes of the game.

Anedra Gilmore (Jacksonville, FL) scored 12 points on the afternoon while also dishing out six assists.

Crystal McFadden scored a team-high 22 points for the Blazers (7-20, 4-10 Conference USA).

The Bulls will now sit back and wait for Sunday’s games to find out their seeding and game time for the upcoming Conference USA Tournament in Charlotte March 3-6. USF will be either a five or six seed and play on Thursday.

Here's hoping the ladies can win a game or two or three and make the NCAAs. That would be HUGE for this year's seniors. After all they've been through and as hard as they've worked, I can think of few who are more deserving.
