USF's Top Football Recruit Suspended

TAMPA - Monticello Jefferson County High quarterback Carlton Hill, considered the ``crown jewel'' of South Florida's recruiting class, was suspended indefinitely from school Wednesday.

Multiple sources said Hill, 19, and a 16-year-old female were caught having consensual sex in one of the rooms at the high school. Hill was not arrested, and no charges were filed.

``There was an incident that required some investigation,'' Jefferson County High principal Michael Bryan said. ``Carlton will be suspended while the investigation is being carried out.

``Carlton is one of our own. I'm not going to say anything to disrespect him or our school. The process [of the investigation] is under way. Hopefully it will work out for everyone involved.

``You never like to see kids in unfortunate situations, and Carlton found himself in that. I'm not at liberty to say anything further.''

Repeated attempts to reach Hill and Hill's mother were unsuccessful. Jefferson County coach Jeff Schaum and USF coach Jim Leavitt also did not return telephone calls.

If Hill's suspension is for a significant amount of time, it could endanger his ability to meet college entrance requirements.

Hill (6-foot-3, 215 pounds) was a PrepStar All-American and rated among the nation's top quarterbacks. In two seasons at Jefferson County, Hill threw for nearly 3,400 yards, 35 TDs and 11 interceptions and also ran for nearly 1,600 yards and 27 TDs.

``We're definitely excited about him,'' Leavitt said Feb. 2 when Hill signed with USF over Miami. ``He's really a talent. He's a real talent. He's big; he can run fast, he's a humble guy.

``Carlton can run. He's got such size and presence, that's why a lot of people were hyped up about him.''

Jefferson County assistant principal Harry Jacobs, who also couldn't be reached for comment, told The Tampa Tribune last month Hill was a model student.

``I'll tell you one thing,'' Jacobs said. ``Everything he does, he does 100 percent. He's a perfectionist. He's a hard-working student.''

He is what 19 I know there is not many girls in HS over 18 this could get ugly...also if he is taking core classes now may not qualify. Not good for USF!

his age isnt an issue unless she was like 12... i think you can be up to 24 and still be ok as long as she is 16...  

his biggest problem is how many days he is gone for, if its more than 9 I believe he automatically fails his classes (or thats how my old hs was)

That's life.  It just creates even more opportunity for the other QBs on the roster to win the job.

794.05  Unlawful sexual activity with certain minors.--

(1)  A person 24 years of age or older who engages in sexual activity with a person 16 or 17 years of age commits a felony of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084. As used in this section, "sexual activity" means oral, anal, or vaginal penetration by, or union with, the sexual organ of another; however, sexual activity does not include an act done for a bona fide medical purpose.

Since Hill is under 24 and she's 16, there's no legal implication here.  The only issue at hand is whether his upcoming discipline will affect his eligibility.

UEI - thanks for the Florida Statutes.  Noting illegal going on.  However, depending on how hard the school wants to be we could lose Mr. Hill.

Regardless, he'll probably just get a (deserved) 3 day suspension.  I doubt they'd do more, honestly.

There must be a clear rule for students having sex on campus if its a public school.  Girl should be getting the same treatment too.  I myself was an 18 yo senior dating a 15 yo sophomore.  Tried for 3-4 mos. to deflower that quite beautiful and innocent child.  In hindsight and for some strange reason, I'm so glad my efforts went to no avail especially now that I have a daughter.

When I first read it from the Tribune site I was very worried for him; I thought the young man was heading to jail  -and throwing his future away.

Now, he's still in trouble, but there's hope.
