So... Holtz is saying that everyone is ready to go except the guys we already knew about missing extended time. Does this mean that Boyd, Baker, and Ernie the walk-on are all back to 100%? I think the last I read, they were all being held out...

I've come to the conclusion that we're not going to be getting a depth chart, so, I am really wondering how that position is shaking out. After Q and Kayvon, I'm wondering what the lineup is looking like. I saw that Jenkins is the nickle, does that make him a secondary option at corner, or fully focused on nickle defense and then a safety from there.

trying to get through 4 more days of work...

Seems like Holtz is just as confused, according to latest reports.

As for Jenkins, there was a blurb a few days ago, that he could be used at CB if necessary.

That's my take as well.

I hope Boyd at least gets a chance to play somewhat against his old team, after sitting out a year.

USF backup corners still unsettled

Posted Aug 29, 2011 by Adam Adkins

Updated Aug 29, 2011 at 01:24 PM

Most of the existing position battles for backup jobs became a bit clearer for USF coach Skip Holtz following the team’s final scrimmage Friday, but one position that remains unsettled are the backup jobs at cornerback.

“We talked quite a while, probably about an hour this morning, and I said to the staff I’m as confused now as I was when we started,†USF coach Skip Holtz said Sunday evening.

Most of the six players vying for those spots – juniors Ernie Tabuteau and George Baker, sophomores Ricardo Dixon and Brandon Salinas, redshirt freshman Spencer Boyd and true freshman Kenneth Durden – have missed time in fall practice with minor injuries, preventing coaches from getting a solid read on who the best options might be.

Going into Saturday’s season opener at Notre Dame, Holtz is certain who will be on the field to start. If the need calls for a reserve to enter the game, however, it’s still a bit of a question mark as to who will have their number called.

“We know who our two starters are. That’s going to be (Quenton Washington) and Kayvon (Webster),†Holtz said. “But behind them, I’ve played out every scenario pretty much in who to put where, and right now nothing’s defined for me.â€

USF Senior Writer

TAMPA - JaQuez Jenkins will try to do his best Mistral Raymond impression in pass situations this season.

USF defensive coordinator Mark Snyder talked about the team's nickel package Sunday and mentioned Jenkins, a safety, will be used as a fifth defensive back.

"When you go back and you look at least year, Skinny (Raymond) played that role and he was a big part of our defense, so it means a lot to me," Jenkins said. "It lets me know I need to come and play a big role. I just want to do whatever it takes to help my team win the Big East."

Jenkins got rave reviews from his coaches with his play in Saturday's scrimmage along with fellow safety Mark Joyce. Both will be vital pieces to the team this season.

"I think Jenkins and Joyce are really playing well in the secondary and give us two more starters when you look at it right now," head coach Skip Holtz said.

Jenkins, a redshirt sophomore, embraces his added role in the nickel package and has the skill set to be a playmaker.

"I played cornerback a lot in high school, and just moving from there to safety I've come to grasp the game a little more," he said.

Jenkins played in 11 games last season as a safety and special teamer, totaling 10 tackles, an interception and fumble recovery.

In preparation for the season, the 6-foot-2, St. Petersburg native packed on seven pounds to his now very durable 195-pound frame.

Raymond, who once walked on at USF, was selected in the sixth round of April's draft by the Minnesota Vikings, who liked his ability to play both cornerback and safety.

Should be interesting.  Kinda makes me wonder a little bit more about the possibility of this being for Notre Dame's ears only.

I really like Jenkins speed blitzing out of the slot in the nickel package.

Well, I am man enough to admit when I am wrong.

Will be interesting to see who actually gets the nod when the time comes though.

My guess is he gets plenty of garbage minutes in the 4th when we're up by 3 scores.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
