Milwaukee, WI (Jan. 28, 2004) – The USF women’s basketball team looked to end a four-game road-losing streak, and a two-game road-losing skid against Conference USA schools, when it entered tonight’s game against future BIG EAST foe Marquette. More importantly, the Bulls looked for their first ever win against the Golden Eagles in 11 tries.

Unfortunately, history would repeat itself as Marquette handed USF a 67-41 loss in front of 1,628 at the Al McGuire Center. The loss was the worst for the Bulls (14-7, 4-3 Conference USA) since an 87-55 setback to Tulane on Feb. 14, 2003.

USF found themselves in a hole early as the Golden Eagles (13-6, 4-2 Conference USA) jumped out on a 22-9 run through the first 12:10 of the first half.

The Bulls however would close the final 7:51 of the first stanza on a 13-8 run to cut the Golden Eagle lead to eight points, 32-34.

USF would need to shoot better than its first half 33.3 percent (10-30) from the field in order to get back into the game in the second half, however would net a dismal 20.8 percent (5-24) in the final stanza en route to the loss.

The Bulls continued to feel the loss of center Nalini Miller (Capital Heights, MD) who injured her left hamstring against Louisville on Jan. 7. USF made the Marquette inside tandem of Christina Quaye and Danielle Kamm look like the next coming of David Robinson and Tim Duncan. The two paced a commanding 48-6 scoring advantage over the Bulls on the night.

Quaye scored a game high 20 points on 9-11 shooting from the field while Kamm had 11 points on 5-10 from the floor.

Anedra Gilmore (Jacksonville, FL) scored a team high 16 points for USF and Jessica Dickson (Ocala, FL) had 12 points in the loss.

The Bulls will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 30 when they face No. 17/18 DePaul at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT. That game will be televised live on Fox Sports Chicago.

How does Jose merit such a break from you and Robert gets nothing?

Women's hoops has been terrible - talk about a low expectation bar.  Last year we were somewhere around .500 and everyone got excited - and that was what, Jose's 5th year or so?  He's had recruiting classes that have been lauded as Top25 material and we've little to show so far.  If you haven't noticed we're just 4-3 in conference, 14-7 overall and you're talking NCAAs.

I am just telling you like it is. The women's team has never amounted to anything in their history. Jose took over a worse rebuilding job after the Winters fiasco, yet he gets top recruiting classes. How did he do that??? That is why Jose gets the break. Right now, McCullum is not pulling in the recruiting classes that we need to compete in the BIG EAST while Jose is. Jose's team took  UCONN into overtime on the road. Did McCullum ever give Cincy a struggle?? I watched Cincy play, and they are not that good. Trust me. On top of that Cincy was on the road with a late arriving flight that came in at 2am from Cincy.  I watched that Cincy game three times thus far to see that Cincy was very sluggish, yet USF failed to give them a game. I was embarrassed by the teams effort in that game to say the least. I made the bold prediction by saying that McCullum's team will never get blown out again like last season. Well, I was wrong on that account. I am just saying that I am willing to give McCullum two more years before I call for a change. The players getting suspended and leaving has to stop or McCullum will not last at USF.

Two years is fair BB2K...

But as far as Jose and the girls, he's still in with Cardieri and the BaseBulls - yet to prove a **** thing.

Secondly, had McCullum brought in 3-4 years of strong recruiting and only managed to sniff .500 once, he, as men's basketball coach, would likely be released.  There has to be a productive connection between recruiting and winning - in girls basketball that has yet to happen with any consistency.  Recruiting alone doesn't mean anything.

Brad,

I am going to lump Leavitt in there as well as a coach that has yet to do anything at the 1A level. Sure his recruiting is doing well the past few years, but there are zero bowl games to show for it. Right now, the best coaches at USF have to be Coach Erikson, the sailing coach, Coach Barr, and maybe the Track and Field&Golf coaches. The pressure is going to be on all these coaches now that the BIG EAST is here. If Cardieri cant win in the BIG EAST then there are some problems. If Coach Fernandez does not get into the NCAAs then it is a failure this season IMO. What is fair is fair.
