THAT looks more like a horse collar than what Hampton was called for.

Normal

If you see that and think it looks anything even remotely like a horsecollar, then you might not really understand what a horsecollar is. That tackle is not a horsecollar and it's not even close, while Hampton's absolutely was a horsecollar with no question about it.

A horsecollar tackle is taking someone down by the shoulder pads from behind.

In the NFL, grabbing someone from behind by the collar of the jersey is the same as grabbing the shoulder pads. Not sure if it's the same in college, but I'd imagine so.

Note I said collar of the jersey, not the whole jersey. But it looked to me like he had the shoulder pads anyway, but I also didn't see it on TV until 3 am so it's possible I wasn't seeing clearly.

No it doesn't and he didn't.

On TV they clearly showed Hampton had not just the jersey, but a hand full of shoulder pads.  It was a textbook example of a horse-collar tackle.

Stop complaining about it.  We won.

A horsecollar tackle is taking someone down by the shoulder pads from behind.

It's not really the shoulder pads that drives the call  ... just has to be inside the collar and can just be jersey ..... and the ball carrier has to be outside the tackle box

All players are prohibited from grabbing the inside back collar of the

shoulder pads or jersey, or the inside collar of the side of the shoulder

pads or jersey, and immediately pulling the ball carrier down. This does

not apply to a ball carrier, including a potential passer, who is inside the

tackle box (Rule 2-34)

and has to come down backwards... you can make the tackle by grabbing and pushing forward, such as pushing out of bounds.
