While they had a tough boss he treated them well.

I was a guest in the suite next to his at Legends field for a spring training game. He was sitting outside, one row behind the seats we were in outside our suite. The guy on the inside got up, and instead of making the other 3 stand up, stood up on the seat to jump one row back. George says to him " Hey, buddy, do I come to your house and walk across your sofa" The only response, "sorry Mr. Steinbrenner" we all died laughing.

A guy that would cut his office workers benefits so he could pay a cokehead $1M+ to hit a ball. A guy whose win at any cost philosophy has raised salaries outrageously, concession prices exorbitantly and pushed families out of the ballparks. But he did donate a bit to schools, operas, ballparks, hospitals and even sprung for some swanky NY Yankee logos for TAMPA cop cars so I guess he is seen as saint.all the reports I have read were that the people who were let go were still on the payroll even after relieved of their duties

He was a Bullgator and now has a new band complex named after him on gaytors campus. Wow! He was always a good friend to uf."Steinbrenner was also a longtime Bull Gator, the highest level of contributors to the UF athletic program, and over the years made donations to the athletic program ranging from television sets to stadium lights." http://www.gainesville.com/article/20100714/ARTICLES/7141004
