USF Makes Basketball Coaching Change

USF Set to Search for New Leadership in Men’s Basketball Program

TAMPA, Fla. (March 9, 2007) – The University of South Florida will make a change in leadership in its men’s basketball program, replacing head coach Robert McCullum, Director of Athletics Doug Woolard said today.

“When I stepped back and looked at the entire past four seasons, I did not see enough progress in our program over that time. I felt like we should be further along over the four-year stretch. I would like to thank Robert McCullum for his commitment and service to the University of South Florida and our student-athletes.

“We will begin a national search immediately to secure the very best coach for the University of South Florida. We will accept applications, recommendations and nominations and include prospecting in the process. We will move as quickly as possible, and we will be as thorough as necessary.”

I've said it before, I don't necessarily think he was a bad coach but the current situation was bad and the inconsistent play of the team over his tenure rang supreme.

I know MAC will lach on somewhere. (UNLV) and get another head job one day.

As for USF, the darksiders need to understand that there will be NO quick fix. The problem with this team is more of the talent difference (between the other Big East teams) than coaching in my opinion.

Still Wollard did what he tought was best for the program. I personally think it was the correct decision, 4 years is plenty of time these days, especially considering that this team is still 2-3 years away from being a consistent winner in the BE.

A very tough move for Doug Woolard but it shows me that he is totally committed to winning.

He has added one more season ticket holder to the rolls.

For this brave move I will try to convince my fellow wiseman to donate and buy season tickets.

Sometimes good people lose thier jobs.  Its a sad reality.

Its the right move IMO and hopefully we can get things turned around with whoever we bring in.  Mac is a great person and i hope he finds success wherever he lands.

I think that Coach Mac righted the ship here.  The cupboard isn't bare anymore.  I still believe that another year or two under Mac and we would have started to reap the rewards of what he was trying to do here.  I bet coach will land on his feet and we'll probably see him leading another team soon.  Good Luck Coach Mac!
