USF MBB Hosts Syracuse Wednesday Night On Valentine's Day

The University of South Florida men’s basketball team enters the final stretch of its 2006-07 campaign with a two-game homestand, which begins Wednesday night with the squad’s lone meeting against Syracuse on Valentine’s Day.  The matchup is included as part of the league’s television package and will air in the Tampa area on Catch 47.  Beth Mowins (play-by-play) and Mike Jarvis (analyst) will call the action.  The game is sponsored by Bright House Networks and promotions include speed dating on the Icehouse Party Deck and other giveaways.

USF HOLDS POSITION, BUT NEEDS TO ADVANCE

The past few weeks have seen the USF men’s basketball team move out of the last position in the BIG EAST standings, but the team’s advance has stopped in the 14th spot.

The Bulls must move ahead of at least two more programs to earn a spot in the 12-team league championship, which would be a marked improvement from the 2005-06 season.

Of the five games left in the regular season, only Wednesday’s matchup with Syracuse (6-5) features an opponent in possession of a league record above the .500 mark.  Providence is currently 5-5, DePaul (home-and-home) owns a 5-6 slate and Seton Hall is 3-7 through 10 conference outings.

Six overall victories could be enough to earn a trip to Madison Square Garden, but tiebreakers could make who the Bulls defeat more important than how many wins the team collects.

BUCKLEY’S SHOOTING UP AND DOWN IN LEAGUE PLAY

While USF’s BIG EAST action has produced a reduction in senior forward Melvin Buckley’s scoring average, he has improved his efficiency in league games.

In the team’s 14 non-conference outings this season, Buckley averaged 16.9 points per game while shooting 40.0 percent (80-of-200) from the floor overall and 32.8 percent (38-of-116) from behind the 3-point line.  He averaged 14.2 field goal attempts per contest and 8.3 long distance shots per night.

In 11 league games, Buckley’s scoring average has dipped to 14.1 points per game, but he is shooting 43.4 percent (53-of-122) from the field overall and 43.1 percent (31-of-72) from behind the 3-point line.  His attempts per game have dropped as well, to 11.1 per contest overall and 6.5 per game from behind the 3-point line.

This game will be very well attended.  USF is issuing parking warnings for Wednesday night and the first and second levels are totally sold out.  I'm kind of surprised, but glad to see it.

Is there some kind of promotion for the students so they're expecting a huge turnout by them? I find it hard to believe that they've SOLD all the tickets on the 2nd level.

Maybe they were sold to UCF fans??

I think K_L's seats are on the first level, because of his USF booster status, so it wouldn't include him. STK was known to have popped in for some games, though...

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
