TAMPA - Junior defensive back Mike Jenkins practiced with a stint on his right middle finger. Jenkins, who had two interceptions in 2005, has been already practicing with stitches in his mouth.

"He's still out there going, too," coach Jim Leavitt said. "I tell you what, not many people would be doing that. He's working really pretty hard with all that, and there aren't many of our guys who could do that."

Leavitt said he does not expect Jenkins to miss any playing time.

TV: The Bulls home opener against McNeese State on Sept. 2 will be broadcast on Ch. 28 at 7 p.m.

Bull bits: Quarterback Grant Gregory, who had his arm in a sling during Monday's practice, threw in drills Thursday. ... Today's practice will be the last of two-a-days.

I think Jenkins played in a cast at PSU last year.  I hope he stays healthy.  When all is said and done with this kid, he may be our highest draft choice when he comes out next year.

Our corners are only as good as our D LIne puts pressure on the QB.  Needs to go hand in hand.

And the DL is my biggest concern this year ... we moved LB Chris Robinson to End to help ... we need this Front 4 to fill the gaps so our blitzing LB's can also get the pressure on the QB.

But it does help having 2 fast Cover Corners as we do.

And don't argue a bit about Jenkins becoming the highest draft pick we've had, but will definately NEED to stay his SR season.

Go BULLS !!!

Mike Jenkins wears the number 4, so Mutt has made him his personal player for the season since he graduated in '04.  We met him today and told him we'd be cheering for him and supporting him.  He seemed really appreciative and a nice guy.  Mutt will post a picture of the 2 of them later.

I'm pretty sure Jenkins is in this photo also.

Mutt likes the camera ... hopefully he let him stand beside him this time.

Whhaaaa????  They moved Chris Robinson to DE to help?  No, ET I can assure you Robinson isn't helping anyone anytime soon.  They moved Robinson because he wasn't responding well at OLB, and was already losing ground to freshmen, and at 6-4 they felt there might be a chance he could beef up and get stronger and be a good DE in 2 years.  That kid isn't seeing hte field any time soon, not at end, not unless we're in big trouble with injuries.  We are doing just fine with Buie, Julmiste, and Selvie...this year's tandem of DE's will be faster, and MUCH BIGGER than last years.

The thing about the DL last year is our DL wasn't that great last year that is was impossible to replace.  Our real skill and defensive ranking last year came from a stellar and deep DB and LB core.  Those are still here.  I know we lost some good guys on th eDL, but you're overblowing the contributions of Tim Jones, and Co.  For example, I love Tim Jones, the heart of a lion, a great Bull, but remember he had almost twice as much minutes last year and only had a .5 sack, and about five tackles more than Tavarious Robinson at tackle (Tavarious missed three games due to an injury)!  T-Roy was a menace as a sack man with his quickness and footwork, but against the run, at around 240lbs when he was soaked the guy was average at best.  Simmons was stout, but really started primarily because of his senior influence- and is stats were unimpressive for a 5th year senior.

No, those guys, in particular T-Roy, Tim, and Johnny Jones will be missed for their leadership on the team.  I worry more so from the standpoint whether our team can find guys to fill their shoes as leaders then as players.  Their production, and their talent is not irreplaceable, particularly when you've got Burnham, Rachel, and Clark coaching the DL.  Let's not forget that Tim Jones split time pretty liberally with Robinson when he was healthy, and Clebert started almost the entire year.  Also, Josh Julmiste actually BEAT OUT Simmons and started like the last four games of the year.

I think we'll be fine at DL, I just hope some leadership has re-developed in the ranks, and I hope some depth has been created.  I am here to say that this year's DL I expect to have nearly as many, if not more, sacks than last year's group.  Teams will not be able to concentrate on T-Roy this year, and having two DE's that are 6-5 or taller, and a DT that's 6-4 you can expect more batted down passes this year too.  Which should help as well.

I've heard from some people that this Schuyler kid has really impressed.  Apparently he's around 275lbs and has a motor that never quits and an attitude.

Who is this kid and where did he come from?
