Cops are like refs/ umpires.

Excellence is the minimum expectation, and they rarely get thanks for it, but one slipup, and everyone's in your face.

The problem is, they have to enforce some really stupid laws. Drug use - in and of itself - isn't a justice system problem, it's a health system problem. It's only when behavior becomes dangerous - like this guy, or when driving under the influence, or giving to minors - that the cops should get involved. Otherwise, they need to stay out of people's personal business.

This one change would make cops' lives 10x easier overnight, and really change the culture of fear between cops and kids.

Agreed, and in  many campus situations, they are simply controlling large children that have never had the benefit of limits ( or consequences) or even an ounce of discipline.

Not all that different from Baltimore, really.

Buncha idiots cutting loose and letting off some steam. Unfortunately because of the bad relations and limited opportunities for legitimate steam-venting, it comes out in dangerous anti-social ways.

Sad, really, when I think of where we were in the 60's (Watts, Detroit, Bronx, etc, etc), and how far we've come, but how far we still have yet to go.

Discipline and de-criminalization would go a loooong way towards remaking our society
