USF Takes Series With 6-3 Win Over Temple

Camden, N.J. (April 13, 2014) â€“ USF defeated Temple 6-3 Sunday afternoon at Campbell’s Field to win their third American Athletic Conference series of the season.

The win improves the Bulls record to 20-15 on the year and 7-5 in The American while Temple drops to 10-18 overall and 5-7 in conference action.

“It was good to take two-out-of-three and was really proud of the way the team bounced back after a tough one that we let getaway yesterday,” said head coach Lelo Prado. “We got good pitching and defense today with some timely hitting.”

“We have a big week ahead with Houston this coming weekend.” We are down the stretch on our schedule with a lot of good teams for us to make a run.”

After giving up a run in the first, USF bounced back to score the game’s next four runs to take command of the contest. Luke Borders (Winter Haven) led off the second inning with a double down the leftfield line. He advanced later in the inning on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on a Zac Gilcrease (Tampa) sacrifice fly to centerfield to knot the game at one-all.

Luke Maglich (Sarasota) drove in Kyle Teaf (Tallahassee) on a fielder’s choice in the third inning to give the Bulls a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Luke Borders added a sacrifice fly later in the inning plating Maglich making it a 3-1 ballgame. Teaf would push across Hayden Kelley (Tampa) an inning later on a bunt single.

Temple was held scoreless for five innings before cutting their deficit to one, 4-3, with a two-run seventh. Josh Mason had a RBI triple and Reyn Segai had a RBI groundout for the Owls.

USF squashed any thoughts of a potential comeback by Temple answering back with two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Andres Leal (Tampa) and Teaf each drew one-out walks and advanced into scoring position on a groundout. Maglich then laced a ball through the right side that scooted under the second baseman’s glove knocking in a pair of insurances runs.

Pardo earned his first save of the season with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. Tommy Peterson (3-1) started the game going six innings allowing just one run on five hits while striking out five. Offensively, Teaf and Leal each went 2-for-3 to pace the offense for the Bulls.

Ryan Kuehn (2-2) suffered the loss for Temple tossing five innings allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk. Robert Amaro went 3-for-4 while Jimmy Kerrigan was 2-for-4 for the Owls.

USF will have an off day before returning to the diamond on April 15 when they host Stetson at USF Baseball Stadium. Stetson has won the first two games the schools have played this season in DeLand. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
