What coach with any real options is going to come here now? This is such a joke and there is no way I can see that USF comes out looking good here. Even in the best case there was a major thing on his background check and we could not hire him. Then should this have not been discovered before we let the guy sign a contract? If this is over something stupid like a DUI I am going to lose it.

If it is indeed over something like a DUI, then this situation (regardless of who is responsible) has publicly embarrassed a candidate. I imagine there would have to be a lot of people questioning whether or not they'd like to subject themselves to such public scrutiny when other schools have shown themselves to have more surreptitious hiring practices. Whoever is leaking information needs to be rooted out.

I don't see how this hurts our search. It may hurt the public's perception of the school. But if I'm coaching at Whattsamotta U and get an offer I'm not turning it down because a background check turned up something bad on another candidate. This may be the final nail in the coffin. I am more embarassed by this than I was the loss to McNeese St. Shameful!!!!

They hurried to find a coach and the background check is sometimes a formality that he failed. He probably failed to disclose it. Kudos to the University for having the courage to say no. It hurts but in the long run it is better for us as a University.
