TAMPA, MARCH 16, 2014 – Three errors by USF led to 10 unearned runs for Rhode Island as the Rams came away with a 16-13 victory over the Bulls in the series finale Sunday afternoon at USF Baseball Stadium.

After giving up two unearned runs in the top of the first, USF scored three runs in the first three innings to take a 3-2 lead. Buddy Putnam (Bartow) had a RBI single to leftfield in the first while Kyle Teaf (Tallahassee) scored on a balk and Luke Maglich (Sarasota) had a RBI triple to right-centerfield in the third to put the Bulls ahead.

Rhode Island would put up 14 runs over the next four innings, eight of which were unearned. Pat Quinn had four RBIs, Nick DeRegis knocked in three and Tim Caputo drove in a pair over that stretch for the Rams.

The Bulls didn’t go down quietly as they posted two four-run innings, once in the fifth and again in the seventh. In the fifth, Luke Borders (Winter Haven) and Teaf had RBI base hits in the fifth inning while Michael Arencibia (Key West) forced in a run with a bases loaded walk.

Two innings later, Maglich drilled a two-run triple to left-centerfield, Luke Borders had another RBI single and Andres Leal (Tampa) also knocked in a run with a base hit to right field.

USF had a rally going in the ninth loading the bases and scoring another run to make it a 16-13 ballgame with the potential game-winning run up at the plate but a fly out ended the contest.

Brandon Murray (Orlando) got struck with the loss going 3.1 innings allowing four runs (one earned). Six pitchers came on in relief of him with Cody Hernandez (Tampa) and Jordan Strittmatter (Daytona) throwing a combined three innings of scoreless ball.

Offensively, USF tallied 18 hits on the day led by Maglich’s four hits. He finished the game 4-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Kyle Teaf was a perfect 3-for-3 with two walks. He also drove in three and score three times. Levi Borders, Luke Borders, Putnam, Arencibia and Leal all had two hits for the Bulls.

Ben Wessel picked up the win for Rhode Island coming on in the fifth inning and getting out of the jam. Lou Distasio started the game for URI lasting four innings while Matt Ferraiolo earned his first save of the year.

The Bulls have an off day before they travel to take on Jacksonville on Tuesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at John Sessions Field.

Kyle's error hurt. That would have been a 3rd out, instead it cost 1 or 2 more runs. It surprised me, not like Teaf to flub one like that, even with a runner passing through his line of sight.

The home plate ump interacted with both dugouts way too much, especially Rhode Island's. He was explaining ball and strike calls to the URI dugout at one point. Why? If somebody is complaining over there, ignore them or toss 'em. Just call the game. I will admit that his strike zone got smaller as the game went on.

Rhode Island is now 3-13. Does that qualify as a bad loss?

Sure hope our new AD seriously will look at Prado's record at the end of the season to see if he should receive a new contract. I am very displeased with our baseball program.
