Ben Howland is 110% not coming here.........mind as well close this thread.  Harlan is the one who basically fired him he is not bringing in a guy that he fired.  Move on to others!!

I can't say for sure, but maybe Harlan lobbied to keep him around an extra year. It's ultimately the AD's decision to fire, and maybe this is what occured. I'm not so sure that we can automatically put the Howland to USF speculation to rest.

His record is outstanding. If he can do 1/2 of what he did at his previous stops here at USF, he will be the best bball coach in the history of the program.

I guess now that Pearl is out, Howland is probably my top choice.

As a casual basketball fan, Pearl was the only name I knew right off the bat. Maybe Buzz. Howland looks good on paper, but Pearl was a wow type of hire. We'd have had a weeks worth of free press bringing him on. **** you money and ethics! Edited by JTrue

Did Harlan have that much power at UCLA as an Assistant AD?

Ben Howland was fired because Bill Walton rode him like a stolen bike.  He was constantly trashing the guy the last five years of his contract because he didn't get back to the final four. They were going to the dance, winning the PAC12, but not getting beyond the 2nd round. Something about shadow boxing with the apocalypse or some sort of jibberish like that.

Part of coaching UCLA is that you're expected to make it out of the first week. He didn't do it in 5 seasons in Westwood he deserved to be fired. That is not good enough for a school like that. Only one regular season Pac-12 title and no Pac-12 tourney title in his last five seasons. Don't touch that guy with a ten foot pole.

If he can put up numbers like that at UCLA I am scared to see what lossing looks like at USF for him.

Just to put USF basketball in perspective to some that may not be totally familiar. Howland was apparently fired for his last 5 years at UCLA. In those 5 years, he had 3 NCAAT appearances and 2 NCAAT wins ... which exactly matches USF's history in the NCAAT in playing almost 45 years of college basketball. He also had 3 20 win seasons in those 5 years where we've had 4 in those 40 years, 2 in the last 4 years.

At UCLA with access and the ability to recruit just about any kid he want. 20 at UCLA is equal to about 9 or 10 here. His teams looked god awful and they only won that many because the PAC-12 was mess during that time. Which leads me to believe is the reason he was fired.

If you can't win a cupcake Pac-12 with UCLA then there is a problem and you don't need to be coaching here. He would be be Stan part two.

So you just totally ignore the rest of his career and deem him not worthy of USF .....

No doubt.  Bruce Pearl would have been a grand slam hire.

Now that Pearl is off the board we need to get Howland or Buzz quickly before someone else grabs him and we're stuck with a coach worse than Heath. We need a big name coach and the other names mentioned just are not big name coaches right now. They might have good resumes but we need a splash hire and one that will create big waves. Unofrotunatley Pearl is out thus leaving only Howland as the best candidate to be a big splash hire.
