Close game until the 8th. Plenty cold out there last night.  Had a chance to talk with Coach before the game.  He said that Mulholland figured something out in his last appearance and was hopeful he would carry it forward to last night's game.  Sure looked like he did. My son-in-law said he saw one pitch speed at 90.  Was regularly around 87 - 88 until the late innings.  Looked like he had a couple of nice complimentary pitches.  Threw strikes.

Another interesting note.  Coach wasn't happy with the way the hitters did not adjust during the FSU series.  Said that most of the strikeouts were on the outer half of the plate. Spent a lot of time looking at film and trying to get them to make corrections. The 2nd run scored when our DH went to right field to single in a run.  So thinking Lelo had to be happy with that.

In the last 27 innings the opponents had scored runs in only 2 innings.  Considering FSU was for 18 of those innings you gotta be pretty happy with the pitching.

I was afraid the cold would favor Northwestern, a team that has been blowing the cover off of the ball but luckily the BaseBulls are a Tampa team that can execute in cold weather.

Didn't want to start a new topic so will just add that the Bulls won again tonight 4 - 2 scoring all 4 runs in one inning (6th I think).  Good pitching again tonight.  But read that we left 12 on base.

Had discussed this on another thread a few days ago.  A HR now and then clears the bases and you don't leave as many on base.  You can have 18 hits in a game and not score if there are 2 singles in every inning.  We did bunch some hits last night it appears in the one inning.  Not complaining, just stating some concerns going forward.  And different managers have different strategies.  For those that remember Earl Weaver of the Orioles it was said that he played for the 3 run home run.  Didn't bunt much, didn't steal much (overall, but he had some good baserunners at times).   Get the guys on and wait for the long ball.

TAMPA, MARCH 8, 2014 – The Bulls scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit as they defeated Northwestern 4-2 in the second game of the three game series Saturday night at USF Baseball Stadium.

Daniel Portales (Tampa) began the sixth with a walk and moved up to second on a Buddy Putnam (Bartow) single to right field.  After a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners into scoring position, Michael Arencibia (Key West) reached on catcher’s interference to load the bases.

Northwestern (2-10) made a pitching change bringing in right-hander Jack Livingston but he hit Vincent Miniet (Tampa) with the first pitch he threw to force in Portales.  Nik Alfonso (Tampa) then put the Bulls in front with a two-run single to leftfield giving USF a 3-2 lead.  Kyle Teaf capped off the scoring with a double down the right field line bringing home Miniet.

From there, Tommy Peterson (New Port Richey), Lawrence Pardo (Miami) and Jordan Strittmatter (Daytona) closed the door allowing just one hit over the final three innings to seal the win.  Strittmatter come on to record the final out of the game to earn his first save of the season.

Joe Adel (2-0) (Gainesville) earned the win in relief tossing two innings allowing one unearned run on two hits and a walk.  Janick Serrallonga (Hialeah) started the contest going four innings.  He gave up a run on a pair of hits and walked one.

Northwestern scored the game’s first two runs pushing one across in the second on a Matt Hopfner RBI single to centerfield.  It scored Joe Hoscheit, who doubled to begin the frame.  NU pushed their lead to two in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Scott Heelan bringing home Jake Schieber.

USF (11-4) had opportunities early in the ballgame to score but were unable to capitalize stranding six runners on base before cracking through in the sixth.  For the game, the Bulls left 12 runners on base.

Starter Reed Mason (0-1) was struck with the loss for Northwestern tossing 5.1 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out three.  Livingston lasted 1.2 innings giving up a run while Jack Quigley tossed a scoreless inning in relief.

Offensively, five different batters picked up a hit for the Wildcats.

Teaf paced the offense for USF going 3-for-5 and a run batted in.  Alfonso also had a multi-hit performance going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Miniet was hit by a pitch in his first three at-bats for the Bulls.

The two sides will close out the series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at USF Baseball Stadium.

Our hitting woes have been indicative of Lelo-ball. I think he's really banking on strong pitching and error free defense, and neither of those have really solidified for Prado since he's been here. Behold his contract is up this year, so I think we may see a newly renewed Lelo focus in defense and pitching.
