    TAMPA, MARCH 3, 2014 – The USF Baseball team will host No. 2 Florida State in a two-game mid-week series beginning Tuesday, March 4 with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at USF Baseball Stadium. Game two of the set will be Wednesday beginning at 3:00 p.m.

    USF wrapped up the weekend going 2-2 with Columbia, a 2013 NCAA Regional team. The Bulls dropped the first two games of the series before salvaging the split by taking the final two. In game one, Jimmy Herget and David Speer hooked up in a pitcher’s duel with the Lions coming out on top, 1-0. USF dropped game two, which was the first game of a doubleheader one Saturday by a score of 6-4 before Brandon Lawson righted the ship tossing seven innings of two-hit ball for the Bulls. USF won the ball game 13-5 before picking up a 7-2 victory on Sunday with four pitchers combining on the win.

    FLORIDA STATE

    FSU comes into the contest ranked No. 2 in all five of the major publications boasting an 8-1 record. The Seminoles are coming off a non-conference series win over rival Miami by taking two of three games. FSU is the only school in the ACC with two players hitting over .400, leftfielder DJ Stewart (.419) and third baseman Jose Brizuela (.400). Stewart has reached base safely in 36 straight games dating back to last season. The ‘Noles are also pacing the ACC with a .308 batting average while sporting the sixth best ERA at 2.59.

    NOTES

    • USF last beat FSU on 2/28/89, defeating the Seminoles 6-5

    •USF has outscored their opponents 90-34 on the year which leads The American and the Bulls also lead in team batting average with a .314 mark and on on-base percentage with .409 clip

    •USF is second in the conference w/a 2.27 ERA and .212 batting average against

    •Luke Maglich currently has an 11-game hitting streak while Daniel Portales’ streak is up to 10

    •Brandon Lawson was named to The American Weekly Honor Roll on 3/3/14 after tossing 7 innings of 2 hit ball vs. Columbia, striking out 5 w/zero walks

    •USF is just one of two schools in The American to not allow a homerun this season

    •Defensively, USF has committed the most errors in The American with 16

    • USF and Memphis pace The American with nine wins

    • USF is the only school in The American with three starters hitting over .400, Luke Maglich (.419), Michael Arencibia (.407) and Daniel Portales (.400)

    • Luke Maglich leads The American with 18 hits on the season

    • Kyle Teaf is tied for the conference lead with 14 runs scored while having the most walks with 10

    • Jordan Strittmatter is tied for the league lead in appearances with six. He’s thrown 6.2 innings w/o allowing a run this season

    USF will continue its 16 game home stand with a three-game weekend series with Northwestern beginning on Friday, March 7. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at USF Baseball Stadium.

    Tough tough series. I was happy to see that they rebounded and got wins in the second two games against Columbia. Now the competition takes another step. Let's do it.

    Also, Season Ticket Members will have the opportunity to access designated sections within the USF Baseball Stadium that will be reserved exclusively for Season Ticket Members only until 6:55pm (March 4th) & 2:55pm (March 5th .) After this time, any unoccupied seats within those designated sections will be released for non-season ticket members.  With an anticipated sellout crowd, you will have the opportunity to access these sections to provide you with the best seating prior to first pitch.

    Wish I could be at this game.  Love seeing USF take on the big three in any sport.
