Why would Harbaugh recommend a crappy coach?  I think he may know a bit more than us message board jockeys.

If you haven't noticed, the coaching world is heavy on networking, no matter how good a coach they happen to be. How do you think USF got Cosh? He coached 5 years with Holtz at South Carolina.  Seems like these guys hire people that they know they can work with off the field regardless of on field performance. And when they don't know anyone they ask someone they worked with before for suggestions. Think about it. This networking system means later on, when you need a job, that guy you worked with years ago that you gave a job to might do the same for you when you need one. Or recommend you for a job to someone that doesn't know you.

Spin it how you want the guy was an NFL D coordinator.  NFL coach got fired and then had any success in college(Steve something or other) - hard to imagine.

Spin it how you want, the last DC job he had in 2011 he wasn't asked back and his D gave up over 5 yards/play over 400 yards a  game. No NFL coach has asked him to come in as DC coach last year or this. There are 5 new DC coordinators in the NFL this year alone. If he is so great, why didn't he get one of those jobs?

LOL ... Using a BR "article" to reinforce an already weak point. If there was even a shred of credibility left in the argument against CB, it's vanished without a trace.

This was a later than late hire. I think the guy could be decent, given that college is obviously much different than the pros, and perhaps they can adapt something for the talent we have.

If it doesn't work out (again, late hire), Willie will thank him for the year of service and go find another guy earlier in the coaching carousel period, and they'll go from there.

I can't see this guy being worse than Cosh, it sounds like at the very least they will be infinitely more aggressive, especially on the defensive line. Sure, going after passes may lead to a few longer burns, but it should lead to more turnovers. We seemed to stick around in 4-5 of the games we lost last year, and just a few adjustments could have turned those last minute heartbreaking losses into wins.

Tell you what. Find one late 2011 season article that says he was doing a great job with the defense. Just one and I don't care if its BR or what. If you can't guess it shows you have no clue and no crediblity.

All the articles talked about how his defensive line, run defense were the problem in 2011 even with pro-bowlers on the line. The Buffalo Bills set a franchise record for first downs against his defense. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ycn-9146049

 From http://raidernationtimes.com/article.php?id=3150:

Fundamentals: The biggest issue with the Raiders' run defense is poor fundamentals. Bad form in tackling, blown gap assignments and terrible pursuit angles are making the Raiders look less talented than they actually are.

There is no reason in the world that a professional football player should have to be taught how to tackle or learn proper pursuit angles. However, that is exactly what the Raiders need.

Too many times the Raider defenders are missing tackles because of poor technique. Grabbing instead of hitting, going for the big hit rather than the "wrap-up" tackle, over-pursuing, blowing a gap responsibility, engaging the ball-carrier at the shoulders instead of the waist and generally just looking like amateurs.

Who should carry the fault for this? The player? No. The coaches.

Of course tackling in the NFL in general is pretty bad, but the Raiders are among the worst offenders. An example of this is the play in which Willis McGahee broke a 60 yard touchdown run on Sunday. The defensive line soaked up all the blocks like they're supposed to, and Aaron Curry was completely un-blocked. Did he simply abandoned his gap responsibility, or was he in the right place on a bad defensive play call? Who knows? All I do know is that no one touched himâ€â€and no one touched McGahee either.

I was about to raise the same point.... Slick... you used Bleacher Report to back this up? Really?

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
