USF Educator Named Carnegie Professor of the Year

A University of South Florida professor is one of just four recipients of what's considered one of the nation's highest honors for undergraduate teaching.

Mechanical Engineering Professor Auter Kaw has been named "Professor of the Year" by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

Kaw, who has taught at USF for 25 years, was selected in the category of Outstanding Doctoral and Research Universities Professor of the Year.

According to USF News, Kaw was chosen for his innovative work in using technology and social media to reach millions of students around the world studying to be engineers.

, Kaw has dedicated his career to eliminating one of the most significant obstacles to engineering students being successful by providing students everywhere free access to supplemental lessons.

Kaw, along with the three other winners, beat out over 300 nominees. They were honored in events at the National Press Club and the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. Thursday.

Had him as a professor for two classes. He is really able to connect with the students. He's always up to speed on pop culture and cracking jokes.

Those are definitely important qualities in professors teaching undergrads.
