Schnellenberger sees FAU in Big East with 65000 seat stadium

By Dieter Kurtenbach

3:57 p.m. EDT, August 27, 2012

Howard Schnellenberger has never been one for the undersell, but his latest proclamation is one that borders on grandiose.

What else do you expect from the man who built a Division-1 program from scratch?

Schnellenberger told Dan Wolken of USA Today that he sees the Owls joining the Big East, following in the footsteps of UCF.

A move to the Big East would also lead to the expansion of FAU Stadium. The House that Schnelly built holds 30,000 currently, but expansion has always been in the cards — if deemed necessary.

All in all, the man who knows that stadium better than anyone who wasn't a contractor or architect, says FAU Stadium will more than double it's capacity, reaching 65,000.

"This is the hottest thing going.," Schnellenberger told the national newspaper. "We've got the best stadium in America, and we're enlarging to 65,000 when we get into the Big East Conference."

Also, if Owls fans think Conference USA is the next best option to the Sun Belt, think again. Howard doesn't want anything to do with C-USA: "We're not going to go in Conference USA, I'll tell you that."

He's delusional, BUT he won UM's first MNC. Why can't the NBE be the first conference with 20+ football schools? :D

He's done coaching and focused all his attention on selling the dream. He also proclaimed something ludicrous like after 8 years as a program they'd be competing for a national championship. That said, he's fantastic. He has said numerous times that they want to follow the USF model for football development. He got that stadium built despite tight financial times and supported the school through the faculty revolt when sports spending ramped up so quickly. I spent several years at FAU and the school has a long way to go but they know their place in the pecking order.

One notable difference is they see their future tied to their rivalry with FIU and hope to move up together with them. Much unlike the USF/UCF rivalry that Some see to want to distance themselves from. But when youve moved out ahead like USF did, there are countless reasons to want to shed that association.

Well Southeast Florida does need a college that isn't constantly on probation. They sit in a recruiting gold mine much like ours, stranger things have happened.

FAU needs to clean up its finances and increase revenue big time to pay for their existing stadium before thinking about expanding the stadium to 65,000 seating. FAU's football stadium has been a financial nightmare for the school so far.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
