Add another intriguing name to USF's talented future at quarterback.

Two years ago, Lakewood's Pat Carter was one of the state's top quarterback recruits, and after two seasons at Georgia Tech, he confirmed this week that he's transferring to South Florida. He'll come to campus as a speedy 6-foot-3 receiver, but said he'll be keeping an eye on his old position as well.

"They like me as a receiver, but if things don't work out for the quarterbacks, they'll have a problem keeping me from taking over," said Carter, who will sit out the 2005 season and have two years of eligibility after that.

Carter played in one game as a quarterback at Georgia Tech, rushing twice for 22 yards and missing on his only pass attempt. Tech tried him at defensive back for a week, and he was the team's primary punt returner, averaging 8.4 yards on 26 returns. Carter said he would be a starting receiver this fall, had he stayed with the Yellow Jackets.

Instead, he said he'll learn USF's offense as a quarterback this fall, working at both positions during his year off. The Bulls already have five scholarship quarterbacks set for this fall, none of them seniors, so Carter's impact likely will be on the other end of passes.

He has a pedigree for that. His brother, Tim, is in his third year as a receiver with the New York Giants. Pat is working out with his brother this spring while he takes classes part-time at Fairleigh Dickinson.

His time in New Jersey helped USF in an unexpected way. Enduring a low of 18 degrees on Monday, he said he considered transferring to Michigan or Oregon, but couldn't imagine another winter that cold. His parents, John and Laura, can see him play closer to home, but that's not why they're excited, he said.

"They're happy I've found a place where I can be happy," said Carter, who will run the 100 meters for the track team as well. "They know that everything's easier when you're happy, and that's when I know I play well."

THIS AND THAT: Former Bulls receiver Willie Williams, who caught two passes for 22 yards last fall, has transferred to Shaw, a Division II school in Raleigh, N.C., where he's averaging 7.9 points as a reserve guard for the basketball team. ... Bulls fans had a little nostalgia when former coach Seth Greenberg's Virginia Tech team upset Duke Thursday. Cheering loudest, perhaps, was USF freshman center Tamara Dowdell, whose brother, Zabian, hit the winning 3-pointer with 14.6 seconds left. Dowdell and her brothers went 4-for-4 on basketball scholarships, as brother Bernard Jackson played at College of Charleston and Jermaine Jackson is a senior guard at Maine. Tamara is redshirting with a foot injury but will be a 6-foot-2 presence in the paint next year.

Keep them coming. Nothing wrong with a 6'3" receiver who happens to run on the track team.

Certainly not going to be short on QB's in 2006... especially if we still land Fayson (probably becoming more of a longshot with all the transfers/signings)

will should be read "MAY"

Carter probably will play receiver, but Denson/Hill/Grothe/Julmiste will all be shooting for QB

Denson/Grothe both can play DB, Hill can play WR, Julmiste TE, but will they?

Finally an article by a Sportswriter in Tampa not taking a shot at Greenberg while mentioning his name in the same breath with USF. Kudos to Auman for not hitting him below the belt... you have weakened my Dark Side armor a bit.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
