USF trustees approve concept of athletic plan

USF trustees Thursday also approved the concept of a plan for the school's Tampa campus that will cluster athletics fields and facilities. The board's approval means USF can proceed with a fundraising campaign that will determine which of a laundry list of new and improved athletic facilities will be built.

The planned expansion includes a renovated Sun Dome arena, new practice facilities for men's and women's basketball, a renovated Red McEwen Stadium and new softball and soccer stadiums.

Athletic Director Doug Woolard would not put a price tag or set a time frame for the projects. USF needs to upgrade its facilities to recruit athletes when it enters the Big East conference this year, he said.

``My intention would be doing them all now because I think they're all needed,'' he said.

Impressive, but how much of the plan will can they actually afford to implement?

I will wait until they actually break ground before getting excited.  The AD has yet to say what they intend to build first and when.  I dont see what the big secret is.  What is on the top of the priority list?   WHy cant they come out and say, "Ok, we are going to renovate the baseball stadium first, then the soccer stadium, then softball. "  

So far this is simply a publicity stunt in my opinion.

The SunDome is slated for immediate upgrades first.  That's the #1 priority.  

It's my understanding that the sources are lining up for that project first, and it will not be to far in the future.  The other projects will come later.  

One advantage is that this athletic plan also incorporates new intramural fields and facilities.  This is an advantage because it will allow the University to help pay for some versus the entire burden being shouldered by the Athletic Department.

The SUNDOME will have video scoreboards before the season starts next season. You can pretty much take that to the bank because Woolard wont let basketball suffer while he is the AD at USF. I still believe that Woolard is going to be one of the best things that ever happened to the USF program when it is all said and done.
