As I prepare for annual "hope springs eternal" reception to start my 40th year of following USF basketball, I am wondering what kind of crowd will we draw on a Saturday night, opposite the football game, across town in the bleachers at Bobby Martinez gym, against the Fightin' Syrupmakers? I'm afraid our boys may not have the fan base to get it done.

First of all, good/bad news is the football game is on Friday night .... Second, our boys are used to not having the fanbase to get it done so whatever they have done, it's pretty much been on their own anyway.... at least this year there's a built in excuse for attendance.

I didn't mean USF's football game (I'm not sure how many would be watching that anyway). As for the team's performance and attendance It may test the old query: If our team falls and no one is there to see it, does it really matter. I've been to an awful lot (literally) of basketball games through the years and we have often managed to underperform, good crowd or bad. True, attendance has been slipping for years but this year's wandering existence may even test new bottoms.

Our nonconference basketball attendenance has been woefully inadequate for the last few seasons, so I wouldn't expect us to buck the trend with this game being at UT. You're right, B cubed, at least our nomadic experience this year will give an excuse for such woeful attendance beyond the "we stink" one. I'll be there for sure.

Our nonconference AND conference attendance hasn't been adequate for a lot longer than a couple of seasons ...

At least with the conference schedule, the visiting team gives us a significant bump in attendance. Especially, when it's someone like Pitt, Cuse, UConn, Louisville, or WVU playing us at home.

And I'l be honest, even though it means less of a crowd, I won't miss the 3 who are leaving's fans one bit ...
