Tearful Bonani says he cost USF the game

Published: November 6, 2011 12:07 AM

By The Associated Press TOM CANAVAN (AP Sports Writer)

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - (AP) -- Maikon Bonani leaned against the wall outside the room where his South Florida teammates were being interviewed and the redness in his eyes was clearly visible.

There were no tears but when he walked into the room, Bulls quarterback B.J. Daniels tapped him on the shoulder and offered support.

The gesture was appreciated but Bonani knew in his heart his missed 27-yard field goal on the final play of regulation was the major reason South Florida (4-4, 0-4 Big East) dropped a 20-17 overtime decision to Rutgers and saw its losing streak extend to four games.

"It's the worst pain I have ever felt," Bonani said of his miss and the ensuing result. "Last year I had a chance to win at Louisville at the end of regulation and I missed that one. I wouldn't say that kicking is you make some and miss some. That's true, but all I want to do in my eyes is make them all, and not doing so tonight hurts so much. I take so much pride in this. I look forward to kicking in practice, so it's tough. It's not easy."

Maikon wouldn't have been put in that position had our defense not whiffed on RU's game-tying possession.

kudos to Maikon for owning up.

And our defense shouldn't have been put in that position, had not special teams failed all over the place.

I agree. Marc's absent minded play on the punt was the most costly thing to go against us the other night.

Even that miss wasn't all his fault. The snap was way high and that can mess up a kicker's timing.

Hopefully this will be a great learning and humbling experience for him. Not sure if anyone saw or remembers the video of him after he hit the first field goal at Rutgers. It appeared that he was talking smack to some RU fans and then dancing on the sidelines. Hopefully this humbles him and gets his mind right, he'll be fine in the future. Every kicker will miss 2 or 3 game winners for every 1 game winner they do hit.

As bad as Marc's play was, the most costly was still on Bonani ... hoping he can bounce back from it. He's usually been clutch.
