Hot Corner: UAB could have fit in Big East

John Reimer 11/03/2011 10:30 AM

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- News that the Big East has targeted three Conference USA teams for addition can be taken as a slap in the face of the UAB athletics program.

The Blazers' flagship basketball program would be a better fit for a Big East Conference that made its name on that sport than the middling C-USA programs -- Central Florida, Houston and SMU -- that have been targeted for invitation.

I guess the writer hasn't seen the football program. Then again, maybe the writer saw the UAB-UCF football game. :D

They just got denied $75 million dollars or so by the government to build an on campus stadium too, with the gov't citing "poor fan support". LOL

UAB would be a good addition once WV, Cuse, and Pitt leave the conference after the 2013 season... the Big East needs more parody with the ACC and SEC... adding teams in their regions will give the Big East some overlap... personally I would rather see the Big East add Tulane or ECU over UAB but at this point they all make about the same amount of sense.

Many schools probably believe they fit the Big East's low standards.

Because it's about football, not basketball. UCF, SMU, and Houston are also in much larger markets. As much as I hate to say it, UCF features better facilities. UCF Arena is new and their stadium, though an erector set, is a much better venue than decrepit Legion Field in Birmingham. Hofheinz @ Houston is about to get a $40M renovation and they are preparing to build a new stadium downtown. Moody Coliseum @ SMU is also about to get some major renovations and their stadium is only a little over a decade old.

What the hell have you been smoking lately?

UAB would not be a good addition at all to the Big East.

If the writer of the original article is trying to use basketball as the springboard, then memphis should be in ahead of them.

I was speaking in relation to the rumors that Memphis, Tulane, or ECU might be team #12... when you get down to debating if Memphis, or Tulane is any better then UAB then whats the point... why were at it let's toss Marshall and Nova in as well.

Agreed. Memphis' football team and fan support is just as bad but at least they have basketball. UAB is probably the second worst choice for the Big East behind WKU.
