Elgin Hicks update

The Arena Football2 indoor pro football league assigned former Charlotte High football and basketball standout Elgin Hicks to the Memphis Xplorers.

After playing all 12 games and catching 21 passes for 250 yards and seven touchdowns with the University of South Florida in 2002, Hicks signed as a free agent and was in training camp with the Indianapolis Colts. He was the final receiver released by the Colts.

Memphis coach Danton Barto, a Florida native, remembers Hicks from his Tarpon days, when he recorded 69 catches for 2,183 yards as a junior and made All-State teams as a junior and senior.

Hicks had a tryout with the Arena Football2 League last year. He originally was against going the arena route, because he hadn't played defense since high school.

Hicks still is hoping for a shot at a roster spot on a team in NFL Europe, but the Arena Football2 league provides a way to stay in football shape.

The Xplorers season begins April 3.

Markey - not knowing much about arean, there are several players on each team that have to play both ways.  I think only a few play only offense and only defense.

If he was good enough to be the last receiver cut by the colts, one would think he could AT LEAST go Arena 1?  Arena 2 is barely pro.
