Getting to know - J.R. Reed

By ED KRACZ

phillyBurbs.com

Safety J.R. Reed was the Eagles fourth-round selection in last April's draft out of South Florida.

A big-play artist in college, Reed led the nation in kickoff returns with a 31.7-yard average in 2003. He scored touchdowns on kickoff returns, interceptions, and fumble recoveries in his senior year of college. His impact on the Eagles in his rookie season has been immediate, particularly on special teams.

As the team's primary kickoff return weapon, he averaged 23.1 yards to rank 13th in the league and seventh in the NFC. In the postseason, Reed has returned three kicks for 95 yards, an average of 31.7 yards. He has also seen a fair amount of action in the secondary, recording 24 tackles during the regular season and four in the playoffs.

Reed is quickly becoming known for his aggressive and ferocious style of play, but he is also a very bright player.

While at Hillsborough High, he was a member of the National Honor Society and was listed in the Who's Who of America High School Students. He also had a dual enrollment at Hillsborough High and Hillsborough Community College.

Q: Aside from the game, what was the one thing you were looking forward to most about Super Bowl week?

A: I don't know what's supposed to happen during Super Bowl week. I'm still learning.

Q: What was the first Super Bowl you can remember watching?

A: 1991, Giants versus Bills in Tampa. I remember that because I was dancing during halftime. My football little league had a little thing for the Super Bowl. We got all the football players from little league and danced at halftime.

Q: What was your NFL team when you were growing up?

A: I didn't really have one. I kind of traveled with whatever team Herschel Walker was on. It was either Cowboys or Vikings or Eagles. Wherever Herschel was, I was cheering.

Q: What NFL player, past or current, would you pay to watch?

A: I'd pay to see Barry Sanders. I'd tackle him if I had to, but I'd rather watch somebody else try it.

Q: What did you think of Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" last year?

A: I didn't think it was a big deal. I don't think it was a malfunction, either. It was late at night, so kids shouldn't have been watching anyway.

Q: What's your favorite vacation spot?

A: I like to snowboard, so anywhere in the snow. I haven't been to the Poconos yet, but I would like to go this year.

Q: What CD is in you car's CD player right now?

A: T.I., whatever the name of his latest CD is called.

Q: Who had the biggest influence on your life?

A: All my football coaches growing up were my father figures.

Q: What were some jobs you had before you reached the NFL?

A: I worked at a recreation center at my college as a trainer. I had a lot of weird ones, though - Sears, Little Caesars as a delivery boy, McDonald's.

Q: If you had an off day to spend any way you wanted, how would you spend it?

A: I'd spend it in my basement organizing my football cards.

He's a humble dude.

You would expect a professional athlete to say Vail, Switzerland, etc. but he says the Poconos.
