I guarantee that wide receivers and running backs won't be dragging him along.  ;D

South Florida signs ex-Raider Robinson

Staff report

Wednesday was a happy day for Chris Robinson and his family.

The former Crescent City Junior-Senior High School all-county football and basketball player put his signature on the dotted line to continue his studies and play football as a safety for the next four years at the University of South Florida.

Robinson, who transferred last summer to Flagler Palm Coast, was one of three FPC players to put his pen to paper on Wednesday. Robinson was joined by Marshawn Gilyard (Cincinnati) and Dale Galvin (Middle Tennessee).

"(Former Crescent City coach Gordon) Roberts made sure he had him established before he left," said Clarence Robinson, Chris' father, of his 6-foot-3, 230-pound son. Robinson played three years at Crescent City for Roberts, who was let go after the 2003 season. "He transferred to (Flagler Palm Coast) to play for his uncle, Darryl Oliver, who coaches running backs. His comment back to me was that he didn't realize how good Chris was and that he was honored to be on the same field with him."

During the past season, FPC went 8-2, second in District 4-5A to Daytona Beach Mainland.

For the year, Robinson recorded 50 tackles, five fumbles with three recoveries and broke up 10 passes. He also blocked two extra points. He was tabbed as the team's most valuable player on defense.

"We were told if he works hard and based on his size, he won't have to be redshirted his first year (at USF)," Clarence Robinson said. The elder Robinson said Indiana, Cincinnati, Middle Tennessee, Florida and Maryland had interest in his son, but he chose to go to the Tampa-based school because it was closer to home and it was "warmer" there and "not snowing."

"He could've gone to a school to play tight end because he has great hands, but he chose to play defense as strong safety," Clarence Robinson continued.
