Uhatafe's father, Navi, said USF coach Jim Leavitt is holding a scholarship for his son but wants to make sure he recovers from surgery he is scheduled for next week. If Uhatafe recovers by the start of fall practice, he could join the team then or delay enrollment until January.

One who got away was Miami Norland defensive end Gary Watts, who committed to USF last week but signed with Rutgers.

Watts' high school coach, Nigel Dunn, said Watts' mother told him she was disappointed she had never met any of USF's coaches. "I didn't even know Rutgers was in the picture," Dunn said. "I was upset that he would change his mind like that."

I guess there was a misprint in the story - shouldn't that read Rutgers instead of USF?

It sounds like mom made him change his mind due to not meeting with our coaches.

Seems very odd that our coaches wouldn't have met his mother though.

I guess not.

Remember, Watts was in a GROUP of players from Norland who visited. Our main interest was in signing DE/TE Richard Gordon who brought along his fellow teammates. So, I don't think we particularly recruited Watts and didn't meet with his parents.

I suppose, Watts gave us a verbal over the phone after he visited NC and we thought that was the end of it. THEN Rutgers Coaches swooped in on him and I guess they impressed his parents. Had Watt's HS coach been aware of what was going on he probably would have given CJL a heads up, but it was already too late when he found out about it.

To wrap up another "story" for those interested, Justin Hamilton who we supposedly offered and who visited last weekend decided to be together with his brother and they both chose Murray State.
