to warrant a contract extension?

From what I've seen, I'm convinced he's the guy who will take us to the next level to stay.  I'm not sure that I want to wait until the end of the season, BE championship or not.

There are multiple components to that.  The big thing is that we need money to give him a raise for him to want the extension.  I'm not exactly sure how all the finances work, but I would imagine it would be much easier to do if/when the Big East signs an upgraded TV contract.

The ideal scenario all the way around is to wait out the next year or so for realignment and TV contracts to become settled.  Then, I think, we'll see whether or not USF is in position to keep Skip here the rest of his career with the exception of a possible offer from Notre Dame.  IF Notre Dame ever wants to hire him, and IF he wants to go at that point, it won't be a money issue.  They will always be able to pay him at least as much as we do.  The decision would be whether he wants to uproot his family to go home, or whether he and his family have decided that this is home.

In any event, we have another year or two to go before USF and/or Holtz would be ready to make a longer commitment.

Lets get to the next level first before we give away money.

We wouldn't be giving away money to extend Coach Holtz. I think it's been obvious that he has quickly put his stamp on this team and turned it around rather quickly after the circumstances in which he came to the program.

All I'm saying is we have merely kicked the tires. Lets finish up the test drive before we buy the car. So far so good though.

What has he done so far?

His Big East record is 3-4?

He needs a Conf Title before he gets an extension in my opinion

Wait until end of season.  He has done nothing different than Leavitt did (comparing a few big wins, BE wins, etc, he did about the same).  He got a few monkeys off our backs, but we also lost to a few teams we normally would have beaten.

Let the regular season go to the end.  Let him show improvement.  Then lock him into an extension before the bowl game.

No extension yet.  USF is becoming a more attractive job by the year which means the drop off in a replacement isn't as great if Holtz does leave so you can't pony up a truck load of money BEFORE he justifies it.

I also believe he's going to help us turn the corner, but the harsh reality of it is one thing, Ws and titles.  Win a BE title and it's a no brainer.  Anything short and he's got to prove it next year.  Extend a contract is fine, but raises only come with increases in Ws and titles...
