USF football senior excels on the stage

TAMPA - Fifteen hours ago, Chaz Hine was crashing his 300-pound body against defensive linemen at a University of South Florida Bulls football practice.

Now, a rich, smooth tone flows from his lips as he sings God Bless America at a scholarship luncheon on the USF campus in Tampa.

Hine is the 22-year-old, senior starting center for USF. And, he's a classically trained vocalist. He sings opera, and has had lead roles in productions of Les Miserable, Grease, and South Pacific.

He's also an honors student at the USF College Of Business where he's working on his M.B.A. His academic advisor, Dr. Sally Fuller, says Hine has shattered the stereotype of a dumb jock.

"He's very polite, very humble, very smart," says Fuller. "He's everything you would not expect if you stereotyped a lineman football player."

A ROUGH START

Hine wasn't recruited by USF coaches. He tried out as a walk-on in his freshman year. He almost quit -- coaches at the time didn't think he was good enough.

"They thought I was big enough. They thought I was strong enough. But, they believed I didn't have good enough feet to play," Hine explains.

He worked hard on improving his footwork, speed, and agility. But, he says his greatest motivation came from his family.

"I didn't want to be a quitter. I wanted my parents and my siblings to be proud of me," he says.

Hine is the oldest of four siblings from a military family where he learned about values and character.

LEARNING NEW ROLES

This season, Hine moved to the center position from offensive guard. He says there's more to it than just snapping the ball.

"You need to know where the running back is going to be," he says. "So you have to remember more than one role on the team."

But learning new roles is nothing new to Hine. He says his first big role was starring in a Christmas musical at Tinker Elementary in Tampa.

He was a big boy with a good voice, so he starred as Santa Claus in the fifth grade. From there, his mom pushed him into singing lessons. By high school, he was a member of the Elite Show Choir at Newsome High School in Lithia.

At the same time, he was on the football team, so he had two distinct groups of friends.

"I hung out with the Choir kids at one end of the school and the football players at the other," he remembers.

FUTURE PLANS

Hine still loves both football and singing. He says he would like to go to the NFL and compete on American Idol. But, he keeps those dreams in perspective: he says his faith and his family are the two most important things in his life.

Hine is a member of Disciples For Life, a student-led campus ministry. He's also active in the Student Coalition Against Homelessness and Poverty.

He's engaged to marry his high school sweetheart. And he says he's looking forward to the most important role of his life.

"I want to be a rock for my children, for my wife, and just someone who is always there to love, and to cherish, and hold them up in everything they do," Hine says.

Chaz represents all we want our children to be.

Sure he can sing (like crazy) and pound the opponent's D-lline, but more than that, he is what is best in this country.

He is the future, and if more are like him, it sure looks brigjht.

There's a picture of him in front of the new-ish graduate business building next to the bunker.  Captaining it up, changing positions, coin-tossing at Bucs games?  Why not.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
