There are four local Collegiate Rugby clubs in the Tampa Bay Area. Here is a little more information on each of them:

[b']The University of South Florida (Bulls) Men’s Rugby Football Club—this is the longest continuous running Rugby club, either collegiate or post-collegiate, in the Tampa Bay Area. The club was founded in 1969, and welcomes interested players from all local colleges and universities to give the sport a try. Their head coach is Gordon Campbell. Potential ruggers need no experience to play, just the heart and love for the game. The Bulls have an Intra-squad scrimmage on Saturday, 03 September, and play in the Florida Collegiate 7s Championship at Florida Gulf Coast University on Saturday, 10 September.  On Sunday, 11 September, the Division II Ranked Number 5 USF Men's Rugby Team will play a Charity Rugby match against the USF Rugby Alumni Matadors to raise money for the "9/11 Memorial Fund".  There will be more detailed information about this fundraiser closer to the date of the event.  For more information on the team, please visit its website at: http://ctr.usf.edu/usfrugby/.

The University of South Florida (Bulls) Women’s Rugby Football Club—the Bulls also support a women’s Rugby club at USF. The team's practices are held Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 8:30-11on the Sycamore Fields on the USF campus. The head coach for the USF Women’s Rugby Club is Donnie Harbert. Outside of the Florida Rugby Union games, the Lady Bulls will travel to Auburn University on 15 October, and play the University of North Carolina in Atlanta on 29 October. The USF Women’s home opener is against UCF on 01 October. For more information on the club, please visit its website at: http://ctr.usf.edu/scc/?page_id=62.

The Eckerd College Tritons Men’s Rugby Club has been formed to allow those Eckerd College students who have a love for the game of Rugby and would like to learn more about the sport. The President of the Eckerd Men's club is Julian Buck. The club practices twice a week, and has games on the weekends against other Rugby clubs. To learn more, visit the website for all of Eckerd College’s club sports at: http://ecos.eckerd.edu/clubs/athletics.php.

The Eckerd College Sirens Women’s Rugby Club has been established for all women who have a love for the game of Rugby a chance to play and learn more about the sport. Their head coach is Candi Orsini, and the President student contact for the team is Briana Ballard. The Eckerd Women have games scheduled against Florida Atlantic University (away) on 15 October, and a game against the Florida Institute for Technology on 12 November. The club also plans to compete against the University of Miami later in the season. USF Bulls hosts Charity Rugby Match for 9/11 Memorial Fund

The USF Bulls Rugby Football Club hosted a Charity Rugby Match Sunday, the Tenth Anniversary of the largest domestic terrorist attack in US history, to raise money for the 9/11 Memorial Fund.  Over 300 Rugby spectators watched the USF team, the Bulls, take on the USF Alumni Matadors in the Sunday afternoon contest.  Between 40 and 45 players competed when combining the two teams, though Coach Gordon Campbell was forced to lend the Matadors a couple of players to finish the game.  The Matadors won the match 34-29, scoring an unconverted try on the last play of the game.  The University squad itself had about 30 players for the match.  The Man of the Match Award was given to the Bulls’ Nick Weaver.  Weaver, who had just enrolled at USF before enlisting in the US Army, spent time serving his deployment in Afghanistan.  After serving his nation in Afghanistan, Weaver has just returned to USF for classes this Fall semester.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
