USF's "FSU" SITUATION

Written by Derek Williams

Monday, 31 January 2005

Last year when Xavier Lee and Drew Weatherford signed with Florida State, it created an interesting situation. Both players could succeed in college at different positions. Drew made a big impact in the secondary at Land O Lakes and Xavier showcased his skills at WR during the All-American game. Well USF now may face the same problem, and what a great problem it is to have.

The University of South Florida Bulls have made incredible strides during their first few years in existence. After a great 2004 class, I feel this team has taken yet another big step forward with the possible addition of Carlton Hill and Matt Grothe. After reviewing game tape after game tape on both Jefferson County and Lake Gibson, one thing that stands out is both of these kids bring an unbelievable amount of athleticism to the table.

There is no doubt in my mind these two could contribute in a big way at other positions. Grothe is as hard nosed a player you will find. He has excellent speed which at times goes unnoticed. He has size and toughness that tells me he could be an excellent Safety. Watch a game tape on Lake Gibson and you will see this kid run fearlessly downfield and have no problem running over a linebacker to pick up a first down. Carlton on the other hand makes plays on tape that tell me he could be a top WR prospect. His size and speed combination is awesome and on top of that, this kid has a wiggle you often see out of a 5'6" 150lb scat back. Seeing a kid at his size move the way he does is unbelievable.

The combination of Grothe/Hill will be an interesting situation to watch. I feel both are excellent prospects and the thought of either one playing Safety/WR respectively should excite Bulls fans. Take a look at some Junior footage on Matt Grothe at QB and also take a look at Carlton Hill's Senior footage and see for yourself.

Makes you wonder who gets the nod at QB? Hill is a run first, throw second type QB... Grothe looks to pass first, run second. Remember though that this is highlight tape... we saw the best of both... what are they like throughout a full game?

The Hill highlight tape had about 80 high lights from a 3-4 game span.  I think that shows how he is ALL game.   I've seen Grothe play a whole game... he is the real deal.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
