LEE ROY SELMON TRIBUTE LOCATION

September 5, 2011…Tampa, FL…The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, USF Bulls and Tampa Sports Authority have responded to inquiries from the public about placement of Lee Roy Selmon tributes.

The three organizations have designated a space at Raymond James Stadium for a temporary memorial to the beloved Selmon.  People wishing to leave tributes to Lee Roy Selmon, the Hall of Fame Buccaneers player and USF Athletic Director, are free to place flowers, cards or remembrances on the tree-shaded mound in the middle of the mass transit drop-off turnaround on Dale Mabry.  Signage for the drop off location near the pedestrian footbridge crossing over Dale Mabry will be displayed Tuesday after 5 p.m., September 6.  Drop-offs may begin Tuesday after 5 p.m. and continue through game day on Sunday, September 11.  Map to Selmon tribute drop off location - http://www.raymondjamesstadium.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Parking-Map3.png

The Selmon family has suggested that in lieu of flowers, those wishing to further honor Lee Roy’s memory consider making donations to Abe Brown Ministries  (813 248 3224) or the University of South Florida Foundation Partnership for Athletics (813 974 2125).

College Football Hall of Famer Lee Roy Selmon passed away Sunday, Sept. 4, in Tampa, Fla. He was 56. Selmon was a class of 1988 inductee to the College Football Hall of Fame  and a 1975 NFF National Scholar-Athlete from Oklahoma.

Selmon's history combines the virtues of family, football, scholarship and community service. First, family; he was the youngest of nine children of Lucious and Jessie Selmon, raised on a farm at Eufala, Okla. Second, football; he was one of three brothers who played for Oklahoma. All three made All-America. One year, 1973, Lucious Jr., Dewey and Lee Roy were starters. Lee Roy won the Outland and Lombardi Awards as the nation's best lineman. In his three years as a starter, Oklahoma went 32-1-1 and won two national championships. Third, scholarship; Selmon earned his degree in education. By 1988, he had become an Account Relations Officer for Tampa's First Florida Bank, and worked with these groups: Special Olympics, Easter Seals, Baptist Church, Ronald McDonald House, United Negro College Fund, South Florida Institute on Black Life, Hall of Fame Bowl Committee. No wonder that in 1982 the Junior Chamber of Commerce named him one of the nation's 10 outstanding young men. Lee Roy stood 6-2 in height and weighed 256 pounds as a college player; he captained the Sooner's national championship 1975 team.

In 1993 he joined the University of South Florida as associate director of athletics. He was named to the GTE Academic All-America Hall of Fame in 1994, the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1995. The Oklahoma City Chapter of the National Football Foundation in 1989 gave its Distinguished American Award to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lucious Selmon Sr. The presentation was made by Henry Bellmon, govenor of Oklahoma.

The best honor for Lee Roy would be for the Buc's to rename the stadium Selmon or Lee Roy Stadium.

If the Buc's don't do something like this, they should at least erect a bronze statue in the south endzone gate plaza

Your second suggestion is most likely.  I would have trouble seeing them rename the stadium.

It can not be said enough.  Lee Roy was one of the greatest human beings I ever met.  What a class act and a good man.  My entire family out here in AZ is still grieving.  When my son was told, upon return from our trip to ND, he was brought to tears.  LRS touched each one of us.  I wish I could be there for the memorial.  I am sure we will honor the man at USF and never forget his unique nature.

Selmon Field@RayJay Stadium with a statue is the best option.  56 yrs of age is to young for any family to lose its patriarch.  Mr. Selmon was an incredible person.  He exuded class 24/7/365.  Tampa Bay will miss his presence dearly.

I don't think everyone on this board realizes how fortunate we where to have Mr. Selmon take an interest in our beloved university and adopt us into his family. He is the reason we have grown to what we are now. His vision for us was daring and his resolve to get us here was unwavering. USF needs to erect a statue of Mr Selmon on our campus as well. While we are current tenants of Ray Jay, it is fitting for us to honor him long after we leave Ray Jay and move into our own stadium, Lee Roy Selmon Stadium.

Thank you Mr. Selmon, for your guidance and leadership.

I was lucky enough to win a COBA even raffle which was a signed ball from Mr. Selmon, the problem was he was out of town getting inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame!.  When he returned he signed the ball and dated it with HOF, and the date he signed.  It was sent to me with a personal note of appology for the delay...

Many people do not realize that the entire time he played for the Bucs he also kept a job at Exchange Bank/NCNB (Now BoA).  This was not a figure head position, but a real working job in the marketing dept.  He worked part time during the season and full time in the offseason.  He also started Selmon Brothers BBQ with Dewey I believe.  This was before the OSI "Selmons" and was a little BBQ joint, painted like a cow, and they sold Selmon Brothers BBQ sauce.  I think Kash N Karry carried it as well.

I have met him many times over the years, and he always smiled, took time with you, and listened.  A soft spoken man who could tear your head off if he wanted.

You will be truly missed in this city Mr. Selmon.
