The first pep rally of the season is a Dillon Hall tradition.

It didn't disappoint on Friday night as Brian Kelly's gang pumped up the Irish faithful one last time leading into the home opener Saturday at 3:40 against South Florida.

Kelly named corner Robert Blanton and offensive lineman Trevor Robinson as the gameday captains. They join full-time captain and safety Harrison Smith.

Everyone's ready for Saturday's game to final get here, including the Irish head coach.

"we're gonna get after USF every play, every quarter, and it's gonna be a long day for the bulls from South Florida," Kelly told the Irish faithful.

"They may think that they've got the weather on their side, but this is south bend baby 9 we tell our recruits it's always 90 degrees," Kelly joked.

Countdown to Kickoff gets you started at 2:30 Saturday on channel 16 with Notre Dame and South Florida to follow at 3:40.

It's not just their arrogance. I can tolerate arrogance, hell, we're in the same conference as WVU and we're in a state with three perennial college football giants, one of whom was recently discovered to be a semi-pro team the whole time.

It's that their team has done nothing, and I mean nothing, to warrant the "no one can stop us and your team is clearly inferior" attitude that their bandwagoning fans seem to have. Their team has done nothing to warrant the top 25 ranking that they get every season. Their team has done nothing to get an automatic bid to pretty much any bowl they want, when teams like USF have to finish 2nd or 3rd in the Big East just for the chance to play in the same game. Not since the mid-90's has their team been consistently relevant to the college football national discussion, and yet you look at their message boards, you meet some of their fans, and you would think they deserve to play in the AFC North.

I said yesterday that tradition is one thing, reality is another. Notre Dame has all of this tradition, all of this history, and all of this attitude to go along with it, but that's all tradition is. It's a page or two in a book, maybe. The reality is, I believe that USF should be able to win today, and could win today if they come out firing. I remember going to FSU my Senior year, and watching USF come out of the tunnel, And they looked like they owned the place, and didn't give a rat's ass who played there 10 years ago. I had no doubt in my mind that they could win at that point, and if USF comes out with that "screw your history, the only thing that matters is the next 60 minutes" attitude, they can win, and they will win, and Notre Dame and their fans can go back to the "also receiving votes" category where they belong.

I really wish my thesis was being written this easily.
