USF captains: Daniels, Hine, Young, Washington

Three days before USF's season opener at No. 16 Notre Dame, Bulls coach Skip Holtz announced the four players selected by their teammates to serve as captains this season, including the first non-senior captain he's ever had as a head coach.

Junior quarterback B.J. Daniels joins three seniors -- center Chaz Hine, cornerback Quenton Washington and safety Jerrell Young -- but Holtz said there's no shortage of leadership in his locker room.

"There are a lot of leaders on this team, and for the first time that I've ever done it, I opened it up to underclassmen," said Holtz, who has only 14 scholarship seniors this fall. "I think they've selected four great captains, but I think there were about 12 guys who got an awful lot of votes. You can tell there are some real defined leaders on this team, when you opened it to some of the underclassmen, and the respect this team has for guys like Sam Barrington, Ryne Giddins, (Evan) Landi, some of the underclassmen on this team that they have great respect for."

Daniels said he plays a position that lends itself naturally to leadership, but he was still honored and humbled to be chosen as a captain by his teammates.

"It's exciting. It's a testament to all the work I put all summer, trying to lead by example," Daniels said. "I've really been working hard, not to try to be a captain but trying to be a leader and do things the right way."

Holtz said he will still choose a special-teams captain each week and may send out three of his four captains because only four players can represent the team during the coin toss.

THIS AND THAT: Holtz said he does not have any players who will be suspended from Saturday's game. ... Saturday's crowd should be among the top five ever to see a USF football game. Over the past four years, USF is 4-1 in games with an announced attendance of 65,000 or more. ... Holtz wore a microphone for about a half-hour of Wednesday's practice, and his comments will be used for a "miked up" feature on ESPN's "College GameDay" on Saturday morning.

Yep. This was the first time he let underclassmen be considered for Captain.
