USF players need to avoid 'the circus'

Here are Tuesday's practice notes from correspondent Ian Lanphier ...

TAMPA -- As excitement builds for USF's highly anticipated season opener Saturday against No. 16 Notre Dame, coach Skip Holtz said he's preached focus to his team before it heads to South Bend.

"I want them focused on what's important, and that's what goes on between the lines," he said. "We call it the circus -- the media circus, the fanfare, the interviews, getting pulled and tugged, the families ... -- all that stuff that goes on in college football is great. I mean, it's part of the pageantry that makes college football so great, but as a player in the game, it has zero effect on what happens between the lines. We're not gonna get off the bus with a camera around our neck. This is a business trip. This is not a tourist function that we're going to this weekend."

GETTING DEFENSIVE: USF defensive coordinator Mark Snyder said it's important his experienced defensive backs stay healthy as Notre Dame WR Michael Floyd is among the best receivers he's coached against, comparing his talent to former Michigan great Braylon Edwards.

"To put a young corner that's never played out there, it frightens me," he said. "Quenton (Washington) and (sophomore CB JaQuez Jenkins) need to stay healthy."

THIS AND THAT: Holtz said DT Demi Thompson is doubtful for Saturday's game with a back injury, and LB Curtis Weatherspoon and CB Spencer Boyd are questionable with nagging injuries ... The Bulls added nine additional players to their roster, including four area walk-ons in former Gaither FB Spencer Cavalieri, former Tampa Catholic DB Tyler Robb, former Chamberlain High WR William Whiteside and former Plant City High OL Mike York. Once school starts, teams can expand their roster to 115 players.

Good. I am sure the media got to this team in years past. Holtz seems to be a good manager of mentality.

Also, I am concerned about Floyd. Then again, I was concerned about Bowers too vs Clemson.

Although we lost to Pitt, we held in check their all-world WR.
