Time was added because the US's substitution was taking too long. Even as a fan of USMNT, I thought it was the right call. Your ire should be directed toward Bradley. He laid the egg at midfield that caused the Portuguese counterattack that scored the goal in the last minute of the game. The US defense had been sleepwalking all game too.

The defense had been "sleepwalking" because for 2/3 of the game, we were on Portugal's half of the pitch.  U.S. pretty much owned that game after they got down 1-0.

But, it's called a "pitch."  And what if he, like I, watches soccer year round? 

 

Pretentious, IMO, would be an American English speaker calling soccer "futbol".  That's a different language altogether.   But the field upon which the match is played is a "pitch" in any regional dialect of English.
