i wonder if this is why USF dropped him.

Don't kid yourself.  USF wanted him badly and lost out.  It happens.  Don't start looking like the deluded Miami clowns around here.

The kid made a wise choice ... at least as far as playing time goes, which was obviously a big part of his decision.

maybe he was making a business decision, just like demarcus smith said when he committed to UCF  ;)

So the kid took free stuff and decided to go to another school?  Classy.

Godfrey almost came here.  :o And USF tried to get Marve to transfer here, after we wiffed on him out of high school. Man, recruiting is a dirty, dirty game.

I was just commenting that he had no problem taking free **** from someone when he obviously knows it's wrong, and then committing elsewhere.  Seems really low-brow.

IMO, he'll be fine and overlooked in the end since he never actually went to the school that offered him illegal benefits. If anyone is going to be hurt by this, it's Marve and his eligibility at Purdue, since he actually went to Miami. I'm pretty sure there is a bylaw on eligibility effects of recruiting violations that states this.

I dunno about that a high school athlete taking any illegal benefit could effect eligibility.  Remember the whole fiasco with Chris Rainey and his "It's good to be Chris Rainey comments" and talking about getting free stuff around Lakeland just for being Chris Rainey.  The NCAA wasn't able to find any evidence for this but they did take a look at it.  Taking improper benefits means you are no longer a amateur athlete and could loss a suspension or loss of eligibility.  If there is concrete evidence that links Godfrey to illegal benefits and not just being in the wrong places with a booster than it could effect his eligibility at UCF.

Are there any repercussions for him if this all turns out true?

I'm pretty sure he would be ineligible for taking improper benefits.

Yes but does it matter that he signed with UCF instead of UM? Does the ineligibility follow to the second school?

If it does UCF is  ******.... There's actually a picture showing Godfrey with the guy in his suite during his senior year of HS.

Illegal benefits are illegal benefits because all potential recruits are considered amateur athletes and any improper benefits received are against NCAA regs.

What are the penalties?

Suspension or loss of eligibility, repaying the value of the items to charity are the usual penalties.

Could that affect the outcomes of UCF games and/or championships, if he's declared ineligible based on situations that occurred before he even played?

At worst he could have to pay back some amount of money to charity and take a few games suspension.  They wont punish UCF for something Miami did.  There wont be retroactive punishments, if they pursue it at all, which I doubt they will.

I don't buy this at all.  Yes, the Miami booster is primarily responsible, but the player has an obligation to refuse what would be improper benefits.  They know the rules.  And the NCAA has proved that there could be retroactive penalties, just like they did to USC for their violations.

The USC case is fundamentally different here.  It's USC booster money going to USC players.  Obviously you punish USC.

Godfrey is a UCF player who benefited during recruitment from Miami, not UCF.

Agreed that there are fundamental differences between the Miami case and the USC case, but that's not the point.  The point of comparison between the two is that the NCAA has shown that they will retroactively punish in regards to violations that happened years prior.

You are probably right that nothing will happen to UCF, but as a student-athlete, Godfrey allegedly received improper benefits and may or may not likely face ineligibility.  It would be a groundbreaking scenario, but it's not that far out of the realm of possibility.

GA Tech is another example, as a result of their violations, they had to forfeit their 2009 ACC championship.

What specifically did Godfrey accept?   If he took dinner's and a trip nothing will happen but if it was money and gifts that is a big deal.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
