South Florida Notebook: Bulls pick up the pace with up-tempo offense

VERO BEACH — South Florida is doing everything it can to get ready for the up-tempo offenses the Bulls will face this season.

The offense ran the no-huddle throughout their first scrimmage at the Vero Beach Sports Complex on Saturday.

"One of the major emphasis we've made is that camp is for the season," coach Skip Holtz said. "Camp is not for a game.

"We've talked about the tempo that Pittsburgh is going to bring and West Virginia is going to bring. Pittsburgh is our first conference game and you can't duplicate that tempo the week of the game. We've got to get as much of it as we can right now.

USF scrimmage: Bulls' building blocks for future

VERO BEACH — Skip Holtz said all week that the first scrimmage was about building depth.

So the University of South Florida football coach gave his backups a chance to shine by giving them plenty of playing time in Saturday's scrimmage at the Vero Beach Sports Complex.

"The (first team) only got about 11-12 plays (Saturday)," Holtz said. "The best analogy for me to use is this is our first preseason game.

"Where you've got to make some decisions in on our depth chart, start making some decisions on who you're going to start working with, so the (first team) only got about 12 plays and the two's and three's got about 45-50. But that's where we need to make our decisions.

i met one of the guys up there and was near the other one when doing interviews, Alex, he's a nice kid. He's a Notre Dame fan...lol...I was talking to him and he asked me who's going to cover Michael Floyd? I said Kayvon is going to be on him all day, but I also added, we're probably going to roll coverage towards his side most of the time....

During the lightning delay, we got the chance to speak with a woman who lives over on the East Coast (Ft. Pierce I believe).  She told us that the local papers are giving great coverage to the Bulls and talked up the scrimmage as a chance to see Div 1 football in that area.
