Expectations intensify during Year 2

By ADAM ADKINS | The Tampa Tribune

Published: August 02, 2011

NEWPORT, R.I. --

At this time last year, the University of South Florida fan base was buzzing, excited about the start of a new era of Bulls football with Skip Holtz at the helm.

The buzz certainly is there again in anticipation of the start of Year 2. In fact, it might even be intensified.

After watching the Bulls close the 2010 season strong, capped by a victory over Clemson in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, many fans are thinking this could be the year USF finally breaks through for the program's first conference title.

"The excitement is hitting us," Holtz said. "It is, it really is, and for two reasons. One, how we finished last year, with wins on the road against Miami and Clemson in the bowl game, it just starts that snowball rolling downhill. And then the attitude of these players, how hard they worked in the winter, spring ball, then the summer getting ready for camp. I'm optimistic. I'm very optimistic."

The Bulls officially open practice Thursday, but first was a quick trip up north for Big East Media Day. Holtz is joined this year by two senior players, cornerback Quenton Washington and offensive guard Jeremiah Warren, who were chosen by USF's coach to represent the Bulls among their league peers.

It was a laid-back atmosphere Monday for the trio as they attended the traditional Big East clambake. Today, Holtz, Washington and Warren will run through a gauntlet of media, and before fielding any questions they're likely to find out just how much those in the room think of their chances this season — the Big East media poll will be released this morning.

Once the group returns to Tampa, it won't be long before preparations for the season get into full swing. Holtz will hold a news conference Wednesday, at which time he'll release the camp roster, and the Bulls are scheduled to get into their on-field preparations Thursday afternoon.

On Saturday, the team departs for some familiar ground at the Vero Beach Sports Village, where for a second consecutive year USF will hold 12 days of fall camp. By the time the Bulls return home, it will be less than three weeks before they board a plane to South Bend, Ind., for this season's opener at Notre Dame on Sept. 3.

"I'm excited, but I think we've still got a long way to go," Holtz said. "We've still got 31 days from the time we report. But I'm really excited about it."

I agree. I expect us to compete hard and be in almost every game.

As an aside, how is Pitt projected to be #2 in the BE? New coach, new schemes on offense and defense, and lots of losses to big players.  IF it works out for them immediately, they could be the #2 team, but I could also see them dropping to the #6 team if it doesn't immediately work out. Smh.

Q. Washington at media day today was asked about the hype, the media poll, and he said that is a pre-season poll. What matters is the end of the season and taking each game one at a time along the way. Smart kid. Although 2 of the Big East coaches named USF as the most talented team or a toss up for the most talented team in the Big East.

I'm a simple man. Finish in the Top 3. Would be a first for the program.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
