I am starting to believe that USF basketball has a curse right now. USF basketball seems to always get injured or have suspensions every year. What is causing the curse??? I am thinking that the curse is playing in C-USA. USF has never really done anything while in C-USA. Our two promising seasons under Seth were suppossed to be NCAA bids. Instead, the curse took over and caused USF to become injured and missed FTs. Next thing you know, we ended up backing into the NIT.  The offficiating in C-USA didnt help at all. There were numerous times that BB WALDON would get mugged by the other teams, yet there would be no foul called. On the other hand, BB WALDON would get called a foul for just breathing on the other team. I am going to say that USF is cursed by C-USA which is why I cant wait until 7/1/05. That will be the day when the curse is over for us and we will see better play next season in the BIG EAST. Hey, I am just trying to have fun with it. What do the rest of you think about the so-called curse??? And if you think we are cursed, what do you think is cursing USF??? We need to execise those demons in a hurry.

There is no curse.

I think you are impatient and an alarmist.

Cursed?  Possibly by a few things...I don't think we're cursed by any supreme Basketball God that despises our program and has damned it for eternity (at least not all of eternity).

We have been felt cursed for these reasons (my 20 year view):

1)  An unreliable and unsupportive fan base

2)  Coaches unable to build on previous successes

3)  A self-defeating attitude by some in Athletics that we are a small fish comfortable in a small pond (thankfully many of those thinkers are gone now).

4)  Limited community support for USF Basketball.

5)  Insufficient financial resources to promote and market even the better teams we've had.

Fix those and recruiting gets better, the Ws happen more and more frequently and the "curse" is removed.

I guess there is no curse because we have not even came close to winning a title. So in essense, there is no curse when you look at those things.  I will just stick with the fact that McCullum is losing control of this team. Velcro, why were there so many players pointing fingers at each other during the HOUSTON game??? Are you going to give us some of that optimism on that or are you going to realise that this team is done?? I expect USF to get blow out again tonight against UAB. A close loss on the road is not really possible because UAB is just too much better than USF right now. I will still listen and hope that USF can win, but I am not expecting much for the rest of the season.  If I am wrong about this,(which I hope I am), then McCullum is one hell of a coach to be able to turn the team around. Lets hope I am wrong about this team. I was really wrong about this team after those close losses to Mich, S Car, UAB, Marq. GO BULLS!!!

This team isn't done... you just expect them to beat teams that are better than them during a rebuilding period.  I hope that happens from to time... but there is no need to put a pistol to your head every time we lose to a good team.

PS   HOUSTON whipped #12 Louisville... don't tell me they can't play.

Concur.

Seems every year we get some fans who are so excited taht we start out strong (like most 1-A teams) and then the real part of the schedule happens and they get down on the team.

You have to look at the situation as a whole-- the team play, the much improved defense, anything you can see as a positive ESPECIALLY when you are transition through a new coaching staff. That is only fair. To have lofty expectations immediately after a new guy comes in and cleans house is a defeatist position.

velcro,

Houston beat UL at home. Houston had a big road conference losing streak until they beat USF.  Anyway, it was not that we lost that game, it was how we lost that game. Sure Houston plays good defense, but noone from USF really stepped up when Swift and Leather went down. And to add insult to injury, Houston was a bad team last season, but now they are good under their new coach that is rebuilding. What gives??? Hate to say it, but I believe McCullum is regreting about kicking off all those players since he has got here. I will give McCullum two more years to see what happens, but I want to see us make the FTS and layups. Also, I want to see us make some more open shots. I know this team has ablility to shoot because they did earlier this season against easier competition. Hell, Mich and South Carolina are no slouches and we shot well against them. I believe this coaching staff needs to work hard to get both Holmes and Dennis back on track. They need them to play better, so that Leather can make his shots. Can this coaching staff do it this year??? We will see.

This team isn't done and neither is Coach McCullum.

He had no foundation when he arrived.  He is trying to build something.  We take the annual beating by Cincinnati and we want to use that as a measuring stick for a coach starting at Ground Zero of Bulls Basketball?

Let's be serious about the short term of USF Basketball...No one should be shocked with what we are seeing.  Very similar to what we saw early in other coaches' tenures.  It's not what you do in Year 1 and Year 2 that gets you fired.  It's what you do or don't do in years 3-7.  Give the guy his time and be thankful we've got athletes out there gutting it out and not sitting in the stands embarassing themselves and program.
