Thompson Arrested On Burglary Charge

By TIM WITOSKY

Des Moines Register

Iowa State football players Tyease Thompson, a former standout at Fort Meade and George Jenkins, and Jerry Gair have been suspended after being arrested for attempted burglary, school officials confirmed Tuesday.

Thompson, a 19-year-old freshman running back, and Gair, a 20-year-old junior defensive back, were arrested Monday by Iowa State University police after students allegedly discovered the men in a Larch Hall dormitory room.

Thompson fled the scene, later surrendered to police and was charged with interference with official acts.

The men are charged with second-degree burglary, a Class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine up to $7,500. The players were being held on bond at the Story County jail.

Thompson was a star for Fort Meade's football team in 2001 as a sophomore. The team made the Class A final.

He transfered to George Jenkins in 2002 and made The Ledger's All-County first team in 2002 and 2003. He was also selected for the Class 4A All-State first team in 2003.

Thompson, Gair and Johnson have been suspended under Iowa State's code of athlete conduct, which requires immediate suspension if an athlete is charged with either a violent crime or felony.

Thompson and Gair played in 11 of 12 Iowa State games last season.

Thompson returned the most kickoffs for the Cyclones last season -- 14 for a 23.8-yard average -- and rushed 21 times for 77 yards.

He also was suspended for Iowa State's Independence Bowl game for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
