I know this is not USF related at all, but old Tampa HS star  and very sad and worth reading....

TAMPA - Former Robinson High running back Kwane Doster was shot to death early Sunday when someone fired at the parked car he was in, police said.

Doster, 21, who played college ball at Vanderbilt, died at Tampa General Hospital around 3 a.m., about 45 minutes after the shooting near the Ybor City nightlife district, police spokesman Joe Durkin said. Detectives were trying to find the killer and determine a motive.

He sat in the back seat of a parked vehicle [behind the driver's side] when the shooting occurred at 1611 N. Nebraska Ave. Two men inside an orange Infiniti stopped next to the vehicle Doster was in and shot inside. Doster was shot once in the chest and died at TGH.

The incident, which occurred at 2:19 a.m., still is being investigated, Tampa police Lt. William Ferguson said.

No one else was hurt.

''I don't believe any words were exchanged,'' Durkin said, adding that investigators didn't know if Doster was the intended target.

''Hopefully someone will recognize that car ... and that would lead us to the suspects,'' Durkin said.

Those with information can call Tampa police at (813) 231-6130 or call Crimestoppers at (800) 873-8477.

''We are shocked and heartbroken,'' Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson said in a statement. ''Kwane's death is a terrible and tragic loss to our Vanderbilt family. Everyone who knew Kwane, from his fellow players and students, his coaches and their families, and even fans, have suffered a personal loss today.''

The junior running back ran for 427 yards and one touchdown this season for the Commodores (2-9). He became the first Vanderbilt player ever named the Southeastern Conference's freshman of the year after a school record 798 yards rushing in 2002.

For his career, Doster had 1,621 yards rushing, 256 yards receiving and seven touchdowns.

Doster, a junior, was majoring in Human and Organizational Development. He was the first-ever Vanderbilt player named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year.

Doster rushed for more than 4,600 yards as a four-year starter for Robinson, and on Sept. 21, 2001, he broke the school's single-game rushing record with 345 yards and scored seven TDs in a 56-0 victory against Alonso.

That's why Ybor gets a bad rap.  Although it is in close proximity to Ybor it is also close, probably closer, to the Central Park projects.  It was at a late night fast food location at 7th Ave and Nebraska.

Central Park projects is an area that this city needs to clean-up and pronto if they want our downtown redevelopment dreams to be realized.  It could have happened earlier this year with Civitas, but thank Ronda Storms, and Buckhorn for that F---up.  Thankfully we got Buckhorn gone, now Ronda needs to be next.  This area has been plagued by in-fighting between city and county leaders.  Until they mend some fences to realize common goals we'll never see our downtown, and surrounding areas become a great thriving metropolis, and areas like Central Park will maintain as a major eye-sore, and the reason that keeps many people and tourists away from our big draws.

Sorry about the rant, but I am still miffed about the fact this city had the chance to go for an enormous HOPE VI Grant, but the efforts were thwarted by a stubborn, and cantankerous County Government full of rancor.  Until they become proactive this area will continue to foster troublesome activity, and sad incidents such as this will continue to occur in and around Ybor City and Downtown Tampa!

Bien - I totally agree regarding Civitas.

It is such a shame about Doster.  A great kid from a bad neighborhood that was really making something of himself.

This is why it makes perfect sense for some athletes to leave town/state to go to school to get away from the influences that would put him at 5th and Nebraska at 2am.

ok just being in Ybor doesnt make him a terrible person and dont turn this into the same thing that happened with Johnnie Jones last year when everyone started making character judgements about him because of where he was when he got shot....  Kwane was killed last night and for all we know he was just out going to Ybor with some friends, which anybody that has gone to USF did at one point or another and doesnt make someone a bad person for going there

It is a tragic loss. The kid had a great future with Vanderbilt. I believe he got SEC rookie of the year in 2002. To get a degree at Vanderbilt is a great thing to have on the resume. He also may have had a future in the NFL too. Very sad.

I agree with Bien about Storms. If Storms was not so concerned about taking away our free speech, she would realise that there are more important things than to ban public access and close down the Ampitheatre. The sooner she is out of there the better off we are IMO.
