Guest Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 Personally, I would rather see it next to MOSI, connected by a moving footbridge to the Sun Dome There already is a footbridge from MOSI over Fowler avenue, so that would help. There is room to build a stadium between the Sun Dome and Fowler and that would be the most logical place to build it.That is the location of the Patel Center for Global Solutions. The first building is already going up (may be finished?) ... and they plan several more."Fowler Field" will eventually be no more.I didn't necessarily mean that specific location. You can use some of the Southern portion of the Sun Dome parking lot and the grass area beyond it and have more than enough room for a stadium. The problem is, all of the "grass area" is set aside for the Patel Center. The only place on campus not currently planned for buildings with enough room for a stadium is north of the Athletic Facility/Rec Center.See this PDF: http://usfweb2.usf.edu/FacilitiesPlan/Campus%20Planning/Fig%203-3-rev030207%28new%29.pdf

Remember last year, USF started talking whether it would be more cost-effective build a new arena as opposed to renovating the Sun Dome (not sure how far those discussions have progressed).Stadiums and arenas typically last 30-50 years. The Sun Dome turns 30 this year... even with a newer roof and other amenities, it's still 30-yr-old concrete; Tampa Stadium barely made it past 30 (although the Sun Dome was constructed better). Moreover, the parking lot there isn't nearly big enough to fit a more-modern football stadium. The reason for the outline is so campus planners don't decide to put a third parking garage, limiting the ability to replace the Sun Dome if that should ever be needed.i measured it out and i measured the rectangle to be a little over 100 yds long and 50 yds widealso, the proposed master plan shows alumni drive being relocated south, to allow for enough room.is there something i'm missing?

The "grass area" I was mentioning is from Alumni Drive to the Sun Dome parking lot. You take that area and a good portion of the Sun Dome parking spaces and you'd have more than enough room to build a football stadium. While there is room to the North for a stadium, trying to get out of there on a game day would be an absolute traffic nightmare.

And traffic is ALWAYS a nightmare with on-campus stadia. In truth, there "might" be enough room if you take out the parking lot, the strip of grass, and probably re-route Alumni Drive. Football stadiums have large footprints because the lower bowls are not as steep as the stands like in the Sun Dome or Soccer stadium.

You'd have to figure whenever we get an OCS that it will be bigger than their erector set. There is plenty of room in the area I mentioned.

When I created the image below, using scale maps, you can see there just isn't enough room for a stadium (this is Papa Johns Stadium at Louisville)... and I think the biggest issue is actually Bull Run - the new softball stadium means the space East-to-West will not be big enough to fit a reasonably-sized stadium.

Guest nybullsfan Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 It took me a while to figure out what "outline" you were referring to, but I found it.Then I bolded the lines and made them red, added the scale marker and made it red (I'm assuming it's in feet, no?), and added a 300 foot = 100 yard blue line in the center to indicate the length of a football field.I do believe this is the future home of our OCS, all we have to do now is find somebody to pay for it!EDIT: (too funny! I was specifically thinking of cmhatter as i posted this, and didn't see his post until after i posted mine. must be fate! good luck in the lotto this week cmh!!)
