Kicking relief for Alvarado?

University of South Florida K Delbert Alvarado, who has handled the place-kicking, punting and kickoff duties in USF’s first two games, may be relieved of his kickoff responsibilities.

Alvarado, who missed both field goal attempts at WKU Saturday, will remain USF’s kicker and punter, but Eric Schwartz is getting a good look at kicking off this week.

“It’s a wide open competition,†USF coach Jim Leavitt said. “It’s hard to do all of it (place-kicking, punting and kicking off), it’s not easy.â€

Leavitt has to do something....

I don't blame Alvarado for missing field goals. We all know he can't do it; Leavitt failed the team and the fans on this one. You need depth. We had ONE real kicker on our team and now hurt. We are scrambling to find someone.

Not to take away from the skill of kickoffs, but it's definitely #3 on the difficulty scale compared to field goals and punts. Have a good leg and kick it straight. The rest is up to the other 10 special teams guys.

The hard part with kickoffs is on-side kicks, which are actually easier than they look....to kick. I prefer not letting my team get into a situation where we NEED an onsides kick though...

Yeah, we all know dozens of schools have two quality kickers on their roster. And Leavitt should have run out two weeks before classes started and used a scholarship he didn't have to rush someone in to take Bonani's place.

if leavittt didn't have the scholarship he wouldn't have offered one up for grabs to whatever walk-on who could kick field goals.

I'm not saying the back up kicker has to be great... just servicable... Alvarado is nit servicable.

Did Leavitt offer a scholarship up?  I know he was willing to give walk-ons a look.

Sorry, I have hard time understanding how so many people thinking finding a kicker is easy.  You need only look at the caliber of programs who have struggled with field goal kicking to understand that it just isn't as easy as finding a full set of O-line men or receivers.

it is beyond accidental, it is a problem. kicking is a problem and we cant in our right minds go into big east play thinking we can pull it off with problems like that looming. glad to see action is being taken, so i hope we can start making these effin field goals.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
