Yep it is fake grass.  It was installed Sept 3, 2008

There was a turf that closely resembles grass but i forgot what kind it was. It was soft like grass, i wouldn't mind having that as our turf in the future or maybe the quality grounds as Ray Jay.

they have field turf at the trop and the outfielders piss and moan about their knees....

whats the benefit of it?

The big benefit for FIU is that there are going to be soccer games there (MLS hopefully, USL for sure), several high school football games, concerts, etc.  There's going to be a lot of activity on that field year around and natural grass would get roughed up (take a look at Dolphins Stadium during a Marlins game after the Dolphins and Hurricanes play on  it).  BTW, here is the latest photol...
