Bulls report: Inside slant  Oct. 4, 2004

One week after the offense seemed to almost come out of nowhere to score 45 points in a one-point, double-overtime win at TCU, South Florida found out its offense might not be as good as it thought.

At least not good enough to overcome turnovers, penalties and a multitude of mistakes and still beat a quality team like Southern Miss.

"We can't win a championship with those turnovers and penalties," USF coach Jim Leavitt said.

Between four interceptions from quarterback Pat Julmiste, 10 penalties for 83 yards and too many missed opportunities, the Bulls lost 27-20 at home to Southern Miss.

"It always hurts to lose at home, but it hurts even more to lose to Southern Miss," USF wide receiver Travis Lipp said. "We want to beat those guys more than anyone on our schedule."

In all reality, no one did more to beat the Bulls (2-2, 1-1 C-USA) than the Bulls themselves. That was particularly evident on a key play late in the fourth quarter. USF trailed 20-13 with less than six minutes remaining when cornerback Javan Camon intercepted a pass.

However, cornerback Bruce Gipson was called for pass interference on the play and defensive end Terrance Royal inexplicably overreacted to the call by removing his helmet. That led to an unsportsmanlike penalty, giving Southern Miss a first down at the USF 11. Southern Miss scored on the next play for a 27-13 lead with 5:41 remaining.

"I thought when we got that interception, we're smoking," Leavitt said. "Then (Royal) takes his helmet off. That's wrong. That's a lack of discipline. There's no excuse. It shows we have a ways to go right there. We lost all composure."

At least the Bulls have an open date this week to get their act together and prepare for an Oct. 16 home game against winless Army. In the meantime the Bulls can kick themselves around for awhile.

"Mentally, they're probably pretty down," Leavitt said. "They're probably disgusted."

they should be down, they have done more to lose games than their opponents have.  CJL needs to do something radical about the penalities what he's doing isn't working

Talk about a profound statement.  This season we've done more to lose our own ball games than our opponents have done to beat us- with only USC as a 50/50 proposition.

There's talent, but some guys need to step up and man up.  Make plays, shut up and play football.

This loss will be the reason we do not go to a bowl this year.  Mark my words.  We ain't gonna beat L'ville, Memphis or UAB.

I meant for my words to be marked that we ain't going to a bowl.  The lville, Cincy and UAB comment...not 100% sure about all 3 being losses.

money/mouth time: all three as loses this year.

i will take that bet! six pack o mine vs a six pack o yours

for a team that made so many mistakes to be in the game with 2 min left is a tribute to our talent level and will to win. add a sprinkle of deciplin and you have a really good team

loserville is the only d that i think can replicate usm

and the others don't have the o to match

our d is getting better every week we will be better on o if OC does a better job and pj and the receivers improves

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
