TCU Wakes Sleeping Giants – Bulls, Hall, Julmiste Power Past Frogs 45-44 in 2OT

By Matt Richardson

USF opened up the scoring after the Bulls forced TCU’s powerful offense to go three and out on the Frogs first possession of the game. From one yard out, Pat Julmiste leaned on his veteran offensive line to put the Bulls up 7-0. Andre Hall’s 59-yard romp through a shaky TCU defense was the key to this drive. Julmiste also converted a critical 3rd and 8 situation when he connected with SJ Green at the 1-yard line to set up the QB sneak.

After a TCU FG made the score 7-3, USF was flagged for an illegal substitution on 4th and 2, giving the Frogs a new set of downs. On the very next play QB Brandon Hassell completed a 36-yard pass to the Bulls 12 yard line. This was followed by a five yard rush and a 7 yard pass to RB Lonta Hobbs for the TD to put TCU up for the first time; 10-7.

A USF field goal tied the score at ten. However on the last play of the quarter Pat Julmiste re-aggravated the knee that he injured in the game against Tennessee Tech. Ronnie Banks came into the game and drew a pass interference to set up the field goal. Julmiste eventually returned to the game but his knee was far from 100%.

TCU benefited by a questionable, but untimely, pass interference call on Mike Jenkins. Replays show the pass, if caught, would have been out-of-bounds. However, after some discussion, the penalty stood and two plays later Lonta Hobbs went in from two yards out for his second score of the night to put TCU up 17-10 at the half.

USF shut down TCU’s offense on the Frogs first possession of the third quarter, once again forcing the Frogs to go three and out. After a couple of questionable calls on the ensuing Bull possession, and facing 3rd and 18, Pat Julmiste connected with Joe Bain for a first down and a 28 yard pickup. Later in the drive, again on a third and long, Julmiste connected with S.J. Green for a 23-yard completion. On the following play, Andre Hall took the ball in from eight yards out to tie the game at 17 apiece.

After each team punted, Pat Julmiste got hit on his blindside. Julmiste fumbled and the Frogs recovered at the Bulls 5-yard line. The very next play, Robert Merrill took the ball in from five yards to put the Frogs back ahead 24-17.

The Bulls dodged another bullet which seemingly would have put the final nail in the coffin when, on one succession of plays, they were flagged for three personal fouls (once on 4th and 28) giving the TCU offense a new set of downs on each occasion. However all was for naught when, after finally stopping the TCU offense on third down without a penalty, Bruce Gipson sliced through the line to block the field goal attempt with 6:42 left on the game clock.

On the ensuing drive, Julmiste hooked up with Hall for a 30-yard reception to put the Bulls at the TCU 38. With 3:58 left on the clock and with a 4th and six, Julmiste hit a wide-open Hall for a 17-yard touchdown, tying the score at 24.

With 2:51 left in the game TCU answered with a 46 yard screen pass to Lonta Hobbs to take the lead back 31-24.

Not to be outdone, the Bulls came storming back with a 19 yard completion to S.J. Green and a huge 53 yard pass to Joe Bain to set up a three yard Clenton Crossley TD run that knotted the score at 31 - sending the game into OT.

In the first OT, Donta Hobbs picked up his 4th rushing TD of the night. But the Bulls responded with Andre Hall’s 2nd rushing TD of the night to keep the score tied at 38 as the first OT period came to a close.

In the second OT, Julmiste found an open S.J. Green on 3rd and 10 to set up Andre Hall’s 3rd rushing TD off the night to put the Bulls up 45-38. TCU responded on a fourth and one with Brandon Hassell rushing 16 yards for the TD. However the game finally ended with a Bulls victory as the snap on TCU's  extra point attempt was low and mishandled - the kick never got off the ground and TCU found themselves out of time and out of chances.

The Bulls offense exploded with Pat Julmiste at the helm. Even with a bum knee, the previously anemic passing attack exploded for 324 yards. Andre Hall had a huge day, picking up 119 yards and three touchdowns on 28 attempts on the ground. The young back also had 65 yards and 1 touchdown on four catches. Receivers Joe Bain and S.J. Green constantly came up big picking up 110 and 98 yards respectively.

The Bulls dominated in time of possession 35:53 to 24:07 and converted 13 of 21 third downs while TCU only converted 1 of 12. The Bull defense shut down the TCU passing game allowing only 157 net yards passing.
